The first day of summer vacation saw me running home with my final report card in hand. An entirely new freedom waited for me to put on my cut-offs and explode into a brilliant super nova of boyhood. There was a tree with plums on it just behind our bedroom window. Next to it was a pear tree. Just behind those trees was a cyclone fence. Over that fence was a baseball diamond on a school ground large enough to land a plane on.

I loved playing with the neighbor kids who had quite a few Tonka trucks. In the sand and dirt those things were mighty, and probably among the most awe-inspiring toys ever. My parents couldn't afford them, so I settled for cheaper toys, and more imaginative fun. Come summer vacation I lived my life mostly barefoot. I proud was of my exceedingly filthy feet and all the dirt in between my toes.

I was fascinated by a bag of twent-nine cent circus figures at our corner store. It took many pop bottles to save up for them, but they were worth it. I loved bologna sandwiches and Kool-Aid and making clothesline tents whenever a vacant spot on the line opened up. Summers were perfect.
