After 35 fulfilling years in the guttering business, I am retiring.
I am thankful for my father-in-law, George Cardin, the original owner, who hired me to work for him as an installer. After a while, he entrusted me with additional responsibilities. Before I knew it, I was working by myself and handling all aspects of the business. After many sleepless nights, I asked him if I could buy the business. It was the second-best decision I ever made (the first was marrying my wife, Debbie).
Despite my uncertainty, I knew I could succeed if I treated people right. I have always believed that building strong relationships with my customers was essential to the growth and success of my business. By treating people with respect and fairness, I earned their trust and loyalty, which led to more opportunities and referrals. I worked 10 to 12 hours a day for years to build the business. I missed a lot of time with my kids, but I knew it would benefit them in the long run.
My son Dillon started working with me when he could. He was going to school to be a firefighter, which I am proud to say he accomplished. Of course, I dreamed of turning the business over to him at some point, but only if I knew he could handle it. My dream came true; he has learned the business and will make it far better than it is now.
As for me, I will still work for Dillon when he needs help and do small jobs. I have some equipment that I am going to use if anyone needs dirt work. And, of course, I am still in the Doolittle Fire Department, which is my passion, even at my age.
For all my customers throughout the years, getting to know you all and even becoming good friends with some has been amazing. To those who have worked for me over the years, thank you. I have enjoyed working with all of you.
Jimmy Gabel, working alongside you for the past 20 years has been an absolute privilege. I'm grateful to have you as a friend.
Kevin Armstrong, who now owns Armstrong Seamless Guttering in Jackson, Missouri, near Cape Girardeau; I was so impressed by him that I gave him three raises on his first day of work.
Ryan Day is an exceptional employee. His hard work and commitment have earned him my trust, and I believe he has the potential to be a great leader in the future.
I can't forget Nate and Evan, who have worked for the last few months. Thank you guys so much.
Debbie, I cannot imagine my life without you. You have been my greatest supporter. None of this would have worked without your unwavering love, selflessness, and dedication. Thank you for being my partner in this journey.
I will still be working a little, doing small projects and bidding jobs. You can contact Dillon or me if you need a job done. Thanks again.
Rick Barnes of Rick Seamless Guttering.
