How to check Your HVAC System
Keeping your HVAC system well maintained is something we cannot stress enough.
Whether it’s keeping you and your family warm & cozy during the winter months, or cool & comfortable during the hot days and nights of summer, you want a reliable system that will last you a very long time.
That’s why we’ve put together this list of 6 great tips every homeowner needs to know about to keep their HVAC system well maintained all year long and especially now, before the summer hits.
Check the Air Filters:
Change your air filters regularly; we recommend every 6 months, but more frequently if you have pets.
Clean or replace reusable filters (like those from fiber glass) at least once per month, depending on how much dust is in your home and how often you use the HVAC system.
Inspect the refrigerant Lines:
Look for any signs of damage, and make sure there are no leaks. You should also have a professional check the pressure levels on your HVAC system before summer begins, so they can make any necessary repairs.
Clean the Outdoor Unit:
Remove debris, dirt and other objects that may be clogging the air filter.
Trim back any nearby shrubs or trees to allow for a better airflow around your outdoor unit.
Hose down the unit with warm water, then dry it off thoroughly with a towel or cloth.
Check the Ducts:
Check all ducts to make sure there are no air leaks and look for signs of mold or mildew.
If you find it either have a professional inspect the ducts to determine if they need to be cleaned or replaced.
Insulate the Ducts:
Check the insulation levels in your ducts and make any necessary adjustments. If you have an older system, it’s possible that there isn’t enough insulation on the ductwork. This can lead to higher energy bills because warm air will escape through leaks in your HVAC system rather than being recirculated through your home.
To ensure the ducts are properly insulated, hire a professional who is experienced with HVAC Systems.
Get Regular Tune-ups: Your HVAC System requires at least 2 tune-ups per year to run efficiently. You should have one tune-up in the spring for your cooling and one tune-up done in the winter for your heating.
