If we seeded your lawn this fall, here's what to expect over the next few weeks.

Keep the new seed watered so it doesn't dry out, especially on sunny or windy days. You'll see thin, light green blades first, and they'll thicken up over time. Don't worry if it looks patchy at first, since seed comes up at different rates.

Hold off on mowing until the new grass is tall enough to cut, then keep the mower at a normal height.

We're in the last couple of weeks of aeration and overseeding for the season.

Every lawn on the schedule gets multiple passes with the aerator, so there are plenty of cores and good seed-to-soil contact. It takes longer, but it's the difference between seed that fills in and seed that just sits on top.

The Freedom 5K Run/Walk is this morning at Freedom Life's Atglen campus, and we'd love to see you there.

Every dollar raised goes to All Things Possible Ministries and Project Rescue. Both organizations help people recover from trauma, abuse, and trafficking.

The race starts at 9:00 AM at 789 Gap Newport Pike in Atglen. Day-of registration is $55, and it's on rain or shine. Freedom Fest starts right after the race, and it's open to the whole family.

Around here, fall is the best time to seed a cool-season lawn.

The soil is still warm, the air is cooler, and there are fewer w**ds competing. New grass gets a chance to root before winter. Seed put down in spring has to deal with summer heat right away.

That's why we do aeration and overseeding in September and October.

Two lawns on the same street, both aerated the same week.

On the left, our aerator went over the lawn multiple times and pulled a ton of cores. On the right, you can barely find any.

Those cores are where seed gets into the soil. More cores means more seed-to-soil contact, and it actually breaks up compaction and thatch. A quick single pass doesn't do much of either.

Happy Labor Day!

If you've been on the fence about aeration and overseeding this fall, here's the thing worth knowing. For the grass we grow around here, fall is the window, and it doesn't really come back around until this time next year.

Most lawns in this area are built on cool season grass, tall fescue and the like. It does its best root growth in the fall, when the soil's still warm but the air's cooled down and the w**d pressure has backed off. Seed put down in that stretch gets a clean, strong start.

Spring seems like it should work too, but it doesn't hold up the same. Grass seeded in spring is still young and shallow when summer heat and disease roll in, so it tends to struggle right when it's least able to take it.

That's why putting it off isn't really a small delay. Our season runs through October 15, and after that you're waiting until next fall for the conditions that actually set new grass up to last.

Aeration and overseeding season Is upon us! This is about the one time per year that we do it.

Our window runs September 1 through October 15. Seed we put down right now still has warm soil under it and enough growing days ahead to germinate and root in before the cold hits. Get past the middle of October and the soil's cooling off, the days are short, and young grass just doesn't have the time it needs to establish before winter. It won't take the same way.

So if your lawn came out of summer thin and you've been meaning to get on the schedule, now's the time. Wait much longer and you're really looking at next fall before it makes sense to do again.
