Holy Wednesday (Great and Holy Wednesday) in the Greek Orthodox Church:

Core Significance

Holy Wednesday is a day of profound contrasts and spiritual preparation, focusing on two pivotal figures:

1. The Sinful Woman who anointed Jesus with precious myrrh in anticipation of His burial (Matthew 26:6-13, Luke 7:36-50)

2. Judas Iscariot who agreed to betray Christ on this day

These two figures represent opposite responses to Christ: one of repentance and love, the other of betrayal and greed. The Church uses this contrast to call believers to examine their own hearts—"we recognize that these words apply not only to others, but to ourselves: for have we not betrayed the Savior many times in our hearts?"​
