This is the largest snowstorm we've had in 10 years. If you have a high-efficiency heating system or water heater that vents outside, please make sure your vent is not blocked by drifted snow.

Is very important to get a very high quality carbon monoxide tester if you have gas or oil heat , and make sure the smoke pipe come off your heater is in very good shape

Beware if you have your gas furnace checked, and the serviceman tells you that the heat exchanger is cracked please get another opinion it is a very unscrupulous action of unscrupulous companies

Things are warming up, snow is going to start melting check your sump pump. If it constantly runs and no water is being pumped out the line going outside is frozen, solid, or buried under all the snow.

We have customers that have never had frozen pipes before We have gotten a little bit warmer, do not let your guard down. We are getting more bitter cold weather. Don’t forget to let that faucet run slightly to keep pipes from freezing.

We're finding this to be the most unprecedented winter we've had in many years; some parts for heaters are getting hard to get. I would suggest everyone get at least 4 or 5 electric space heaters as backups. Keep in mind these heaters must be placed in various parts of the house to keep them from overloading one electrical circuit.

Your hot air heater has likely been running nonstop for the past several weeks. A dirty air filter makes your heater work much harder. Take a look at it. If it’s dirty, change it.

If you have hot water heat you don’t need to worry if you lose water the water that’s inside your heating system is there all the time and stays there so you will not lose heat if you lose your water

I hope some of the tips I’ve been providing recently have been helpful, to keep in mind. It’s been a long time since we’ve experienced temperatures this low for such an extended period of time; you may find that you may not be able to get the temperature up in your house to what you normally maintain it at. Your heater was designed to heat your home to a temperature during normal circumstances, so instead of setting it at 72 or 74, you may have to set it down to 68 do not turn it down too low and try to keep your doors closed as much as possible, and if you have curtains, close them to prevent cold air from entering. Let me know if these little tips are helping you thank you.

Last several weeks I have found how many people do not know where to turn their water off in an emergency. Know where your water meter is, if you have city water make sure the valve actually works where you can turn it off. If you have a pump there will be a valve right next to your water tank where you can turn your water off. Also check to see if that valve works know where to turn your outside faucet off, make sure the valve works to that and never leave the hose on the end of our outside hydrant.
It’s been a while since we’ve had a major snowstorm if you have a high efficiency gas furnace the PVC exhaust Pipe it goes to the outside of the house may get covered and if there’s a snow drift, check to make sure that it stays clear

Plumbing tips during this totally frigid weather
1 - Do not turn your heat down too
  low at night

2- at the highest faucet of your house, leave the faucet trickle slightly

3 - open your kitchen sink and vanity doors to let the heat in and keep the pipes from freezing

4 - if you were planning on going away for an extended period of time know where to turn your water off and drain the lines down to the lowest point this will prevent a major flood from happening if a pipe would happen to burst

5 - you may want to invest in a Wi-Fi thermostat where you can keep tabs on your phone of the temperature in your home.

I hope these tips help you and everyone be safe
