CVDA played an integral role in the St. Mary Medical Center green roof project, from conceptual design and grant application assistance to consultant coordination. Working with Philadelphia-based civil engineering firm Roofscapes, Inc., our team addressed the engineering challenges of a lightweight roof system with just 3¾ inches of growing media.

Inspired by a weaver’s loom, the design features bands of colorful sedums, recycled rubber tiles, and white pebbles to symbolize the connection between St. Mary Medical Center and the surrounding community. Careful plant selection ensures visual interest throughout the seasons, even when sedums are dormant.

Beyond its aesthetic value, the green roof helps reduce energy consumption and manage peak stormwater runoff. Though not accessible to visitors, it provides calming views for patients, medical staff, and visitors from nearby patient rooms, offices, and hallways.

This project demonstrates how thoughtful landscape design can unite technical innovation, environmental performance, and a more restorative healthcare environment.

Gorgeous autumn colors at Wildlands Conservancy’s Pool Wildlife Sanctuary in Emmaus, Pennsylvania. 🍂

Our firm developed a long-range master plan for this 72-acre sanctuary along the Little Lehigh Creek, a special place dedicated to conservation, environmental education, and the preservation of open space.

With nature trails, an arboretum, ponds, native plant communities, and wildflower meadows, the sanctuary offers visitors an opportunity to connect with nature in every season.

We’re proud to have contributed to the long-term vision for this remarkable natural resource.

Deer browsing can be a challenge for gardeners, especially as the seasons change. 🌿 Now is a good time to take steps to protect vulnerable plants and trees.

One simple DIY option to try: Irish Spring soap. Cut bars into halves or quarters, make a small hole with a nail, and thread a zip tie or string through each piece. Hang them from plants or tree branches approximately three feet above the ground.

While results may vary, this is an easy, low-cost method some gardeners use to help deter deer.

Fallen leaves are gardener's gold! 🍁 Make the most of this abundant annual windfall by mixing shredded leaves right into your garden. Next spring, your soil will be teeming with earthworms and other beneficial organisms. Note: when adding shredded leaves right to the soil, include some slow-release nitrogen fertilizers to help the leaves decompose and to ensure that soil microbes don’t use all of the available nitrogen. 🍂

Some beautiful autumn shots of the 10.5-acre Woodlawn National Cemetery in Elmira, New York. Established during the Civil War, this historic site is uniquely known for containing the graves of Confederate soldiers. Due to space limitations, the cemetery was closed to new burials until a vital Columbarium project was completed in 2005.

Our team was proud to be hired by Eagle Design Inc. and the National Cemetery Administration (NCA) U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to bring this expansion to life.

The Design Challenge & Solution:
The concept focused on constructing new columbarium walls along the cemetery's perimeter, which backs up directly to residential properties. We designed five high walls that serve a dual purpose: expanding the cemetery's capacity while creating an elegant visual and sound barrier for both visitors and neighboring residents.

Fun Fact: The adjacent public Woodlawn Cemetery is also the final resting place of legendary author Mark Twain.
