Save this for the first time your heat won't come on. Four things to check before you call anyone:

1. Thermostat: set to HEAT, a few degrees above the room, fresh batteries.
2. Power: the switch by the furnace or boiler is on (it looks like a light switch), and the breaker hasn't tripped.
3. Filter: a clogged furnace filter can shut the system down.
4. Fuel: oil tank not empty, gas turned on.

Smell gas? Leave the house and call your gas company or 911 from outside.

Clocks went back last night. While you're at it, take five minutes:

☐ Press test on every smoke alarm
☐ Press test on every carbon monoxide alarm
☐ New batteries if they're over a year old
☐ Check the date on the back. CO alarms last about 5–7 years, smoke alarms about 10.

Send this to your parents. They'll grumble, and then they'll do it.
