Late summer and early fall are the times to be most cautious around wasp nests 🐝 Wasps and hornets are at their most aggressive then because their nests have reached peak size and natural food sources are scarcer. This drives them to seek out ripe fruits, vegetables, and other human food, making them highly defensive of their colonies.

But they're not aaaall bad! 🐝 Even social wasps are beneficial. They hunt flies and insect pests that can harm your plants. And they also help pollinate flowers and fruit trees.

Learn whether or not you should remove the wasp nest, or if it's best just to leave it at Almanac.com/how-get-rid-wasps-safely-if-you-must

Tonight is September's New Moon! 🌑 This phase is named as such because it starts a new lunar cycle. At this time, the Sun and Moon are in conjunction, meaning that they are closest together in the sky, on the same side of Earth (Sun→Moon→Earth).

From our perspective, the Moon appears totally dark: We can not usually see it because we are facing the Moon’s shadowed side, which does not receive any direct sunlight. But if we were to travel to the other side of the Moon, the part that faces the Sun, it would be totally illuminated.

The September birthstone is the gorgeous blue sapphire! The sapphire has symbolized truth, sincerity, and nobility for thousands of years. Additionally, it was thought to have healing powers, particularly for eye diseases and against poisons.

One of the most famous sapphires is the 12-carat engagement ring given to Princess Diana. The ring was passed down to Prince William, who gave it to his wife, Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge.

In addition to being the birthstone for September, sapphire is also the gem given for a 5th and 45th wedding anniversary. Learn more facts and folklore about these gemstones at Almanac.com/September-Birthstone

Fall is the time to care for your peony plants! 🌸 After frost, the foliage will die back completely. Cut the plant to the ground in the fall to avoid overwintering diseases.

After peony leaves begin to fade, side-dress plants with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. But don’t smother peonies with mulch. Where cold temperatures are severe, for the first winter after planting, mulch VERY loosely with pine needles or shredded bark, and remove mulch in the spring 🌸

The fall equinox has been a day of celebration for cultures since ancient days, when people tracked the transitions of Earth’s journeys around the Sun ☀️

At Machu Picchu in Peru, an ancient stone monument called Intihuatana—meaning “Hitching Post of the Sun”—serves as a solar clock to mark the dates of the equinoxes and solstices.

In Mexico, the Mayans built a giant pyramid called Chichén Itzá. On the equinoxes, the light looks like a snake slithering down the pyramid’s steps.

And in England, Stonehenge was also built with the equinoxes and solstices in mind.

Across many regions of the Northern Hemisphere, the landscape silently explodes with vibrant colors of red, yellow, and orange, marking fall's colorful arrival. Learn more about the meaning of fall across cultures at Almanac.com/Fall 🍂

Woolly bear caterpillars—also called woolly worms—have a reputation for being able to forecast the coming winter weather. But how? And just how true is this weather lore? 🐛

According to legend, if their rusty band is wide, then it will be a mild winter. The more black there is, the more severe the winter ❄️

Long before the leaves turn, the clues are already appearing—in ocean temperatures, high-altitude winds, and the Sun’s own cycles. Here are the signals behind our winter outlook:

💦 A strong El Niño has returned and is expected to continue through winter.

☀️ Solar Cycle 25 is past its peak, and solar activity is waning.

🌊 The Atlantic’s warm pattern is expected to continue, while the Pacific’s cool pattern should weaken.

🌪️ If the polar vortex shifts south, it could send colder-than-average air from Canada farther into the United States.

🌧️ A pattern in the Indian Ocean could strengthen the Pacific jet stream and increase storms in parts of the country this winter.

No single climate signal determines what winter will bring. Long-range forecasting draws on these influences taken together—and at The Old Farmer’s Almanac, that blend of science and experience helps guide our winter outlook each year.
