Beautiful gardens don’t have to be thirsty gardens! 🌿🌸

Australian and South African natives are a great match for our Bay Area climate, bringing unique flowers, beautiful foliage, and plenty of personality to low water landscapes.

Some of our favorites include Grevillea, Protea, Cape Mallow, Westringia, Kangaroo Paw, Correa, and Bottlebrush! Many are also wonderful for attracting hummingbirds and other pollinators.

Pair them with California natives for a colorful, water-wise garden that can thrive through our dry summers once established.

Looking for a flowering evergreen that stays compact? 💜

Sweet Pea Shrub, or Polygala fruticosa, is a great choice for smaller garden spaces and large containers. Plus, it makes a colorful impact with it’s abundant blooms.

Care:
☀️ Light: Full sun to part sun
🍄‍🟫 Soil: Rich, well draining soil
💧 Water: Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season. Once established, you can reduce the frequency.
🪴 Containers: Use a pot with good drainage and check soil moisture regularly
🧑‍🌾 Feeding: Apply a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring
🌳 Size: Compact varieties typically stay around 2 to 3 feet tall and wide

A little extra love for our local wildlife this fall! 🐝🐦🍂

October is a great time to add California native plants that support pollinators and birds through the changing seasons.

🌼 For late-season nectar and pollen:
Coyote Brush, California Goldenrod, Native Asters, and California Fuchsia.

🐦 For fall and winter berries:
Coffeeberry and Toyon provide a natural food source for visiting birds.
