Have you got grass-like patches that grow at least twice as fast as your regular grass during the summer, even during some of the hottest weather possible? You likely are combating one of the many species of nutsedge common in lawns across the NOVA region. The most common type of “sedge” is the yellow variety. The way to identify these plants is to remember “sedges have edges” meaning the stems are three sided and have a very tough exterior. These plants are not grasses, which gives us the opportunity to apply selective herbicides to control their spread if treated early enough in the growing season.

Yellow nutsedge produces its nutlet at the tip of the rhizome, which makes it difficult to eradicate once the plant reaches maturity. Nutsedge prefers warm temperatures, full sun, and higher soil moisture. Mowing at higher heights will help shade and thus suppress this invasive plant. Do not over-water as this will speed up the growth process.
