Water infrastructure projects in Wilmington are critical to supporting the continued growth of the city and surrounding region. The Northern Regional Pump Station and Force Main project was designed to strengthen that infrastructure by expanding wastewater conveyance capacity and upgrading key components of the existing system.

Carolina Civilworks led the project, installing a new 24-inch force main to connect existing Pump Station 155 to the new Northern Regional Pump Station Phase B while also completing extensive upgrades at Pump Station 155. Those improvements included replacing the existing pumps with four new high-capacity pumps, upgrading the electrical and control systems, installing four new variable frequency drives, updating PLC controls, and adding a new level instrumentation and bubbler system.

Additional work included upgrades to the odor control system and installation of a new grinder. The project required close coordination among Carolina Civilworks, CFPUA, specialty subcontractors, and equipment manufacturers throughout construction, startup, testing, and commissioning.

Together, these improvements provide CFPUA with a more capable and reliable system to help meet the region’s growing wastewater infrastructure needs.

Carolina Civilworks is proud to be part of the team building Duke Health’s new hospital in Cary, NC.  We are self-performing the full site utility package which includes all domestic & fire water, sewer, and storm drain, for ST Wooten who is working directly for general contractor Robins & Morton.

We kicked things off with storm drain, since a large bypass run was critical path, then brought on a second crew for the sanitary sewer outfall and service tie-ins to the new hospital. Sewer outfall is now complete as well as a large underground stormwater detention system. Storm drain remains the biggest piece of our scope, with nearly two miles of pipe once it’s all in the ground, and we’ve still got two crews out there running it.

Next up: we keep pushing storm drain, wrap up the remaining sewer work, and start on water line. Right now the primary focus are the utility installations that will impact B200 - the freestanding emergency department – which is slated to open this fall ahead of the main hospital.

We tend to excel on phased projects like this one with hard milestones.  Meticulous planning and having the crews and equipment to run multiple fronts at once is what lets us hit those deadlines.

A look at progress on North Village Regional Pump Station & Utilities, where our team is building the regional pump station, sewer outfall, and associated force main that will serve a future master-planned community.

One of the first milestones on site was setting the wet well for the pump station. From there, crews moved into laying the gravity sewer through the outfall, with the force main to follow to wrap up the line work portion of the project. Next up, a second crew mobilizes to take on the pump station’s mechanical scope (pumps, piping, and valves), putting two crews on site for the stretch ahead.

Over 4,500 LF of 12” force main
Almost 5,000 LF of 12” gravity sewer

We’re self-performing the majority of the work, with the exception of clearing, blasting, electrical, precast coatings, and fencing.

Carolina Civilworks completed the site utilities package for the Healing Transitions for Women Addition project in Raleigh, working alongside Clancy & Theys. The scope included installation of water line, sanitary sewer, and storm drain infrastructure to support the new residential addition.

A major component of the project was installation of a large underground detention system CMP supplied by Contech Engineered Solutions. Due to the size and location of the detention system, this phase became a critical path item for the overall project schedule.

The system was located directly adjacent to the building footprint and occupied a large portion of the existing parking lot, making early installation essential before vertical construction could begin. To facilitate the work, Carolina Civilworks also completed sanitary sewer relocations that conflicted with the detention system and building footprint.

Once the relocation work and detention system were completed, crews were able to move into the upstream and downstream storm drain installation and continue into the water line portion of the project. Carolina Civilworks self-performed 100% of the utility work on the project.

Projects like this highlight the importance of experience, coordination, and trust between contractor and client. Clancy & Theys relied on Carolina Civilworks to deliver a schedule-critical portion of the project safely, efficiently, and on time, which continues to be a big part of the long-standing working relationship between us.

Carolina Civilworks is currently constructing the Ponder Pump Station for the Ammons Acres development on behalf of Brookfield Residential. This pump station will ultimately serve the entire development once buildout is complete, making it a key piece of the project’s long-term infrastructure.

Our scope is focused on the full on-site pump station construction, including all underground and above-ground piping, as well as installation of the precast wet well and associated structures. We’re self-performing the work with the exception of electrical, which is being handled by Wilson & Coffield.

Instead of using a traditional crane, we partnered with Dean’s Wrecker Service who utilized their rotating boom trucks to fly the structure into place. It ended up being a more efficient and cost-effective approach while still getting the job done safely.

At this stage, all major piping and precast structures are in place. We’re moving into final site components, including the pad for the odor control and electrical building, with electrical work already underway.

Pump stations like this are a core part of what we do. It’s a space we’ve spent years working in, and projects like Ponder are a good example of that experience in action. This also marks our second pump station project with Brookfield, continuing a relationship we’ve built through past work in the area.
