Below are some of the flowers you may seeing popping in the summer months 3 of the 4 flowers belong to the same flower family. The first to guess the family will get a special summer treat for their yard :)

North Carolina Lawns:

North Carolina is divided into three areas called the Coastal Plains (Eastern side), The Piedmont area (middle counties) and the Blue Ridge Mountain area (Western counties).

Piedmont / Blue Ridge Regions:
From Asheville west into the Blue Ridge mountains Bluegrasses can be used at higher / cool temperature mountain elevations. The lower elevation areas of Blue Ridge and the Piedmont regions are adapted for Fescues (Tall & Fine), Bluegrass, Bermudagrass, and Zoysiagrass.

Along the Coastal Plains your best choices are Bermudagrass (full sun areas), Centipedegrass, Zoysiagrass (sunny to light shade), and in the shadier / moist soil Tall Fescue and Carpetgrass can be used. Centipedegrass can also be used in the warmer areas of Piedmont region. St. Augustine is often found used along warmer coastal areas of the Coastal Plains. A soil test should be obtained annually on your lawn and in most areas of North Carolina the soil pH is acidic requiring applications of lime. Ryegrass is used in all areas, especially for overseeding Bermuda lawns to provide winter color.

Lawn Care Fun Facts:

*There are approximately 50 million acres of grass in the United States. Approximately 21 million of those acres are in our front and back yards.

*Did you know? Lawns are very efficient oxygen producers. They are about three times more effective than trees. And, their season to produce oxygen is much longer. Even a smaller sized lawn (50 ft. x 50 ft.) releases enough oxygen daily to meet the needs of a family of four for 24 hours and absorbs carbon dioxide, ozone, hydrogen fluoride and other toxins.

*There’s a museum dedicate to the lawn mower, the British Lawnmower Museum, in Merseyside, Great Britain.
