We love working with DIY homeowners. We provide hourly on site consultations to help guide clients through the process. We come out to the site. We discuss everything from plant selection, planting bed lay out, to materials selection, and installation tips. Of course we provide info on where to get the materials for your project. With over 25 years of industry experience, we have plenty of tips to save you time and money on your project.

Design fees have been a big topic of discussion this year. Dogwood Designs puts a lot of time and effort into creating amazing site specific designs tailored to the individual clients needs and wants. We spend a minimum of 5 hours on even basic designs. Some larger complex designs will take several days. We put over 25 years of industry experience into each design.

One way a lot of companies are offering to help save clients money: they are offering free design packages. A large number of our installers are willing to cover all Dogwood Designs fees upfront when a deposit of $15,000 or more is paid. We will create our custom design package you own for free when a deposit of $15,000 or more is paid towards projects of $30,000 or more. (The fine print: should you cancel after the design is started, there will be a fee deducted from the deposit. You will not get a full refund of the deposit. The design fee will be taken out of the deposit)

Winding up our Earth Week events, we enjoyed a presentation from Minneapolis’ own sustainable landscaper, Dogwood Designs. They shared all about INCREDIBLE EDIBLES – PLANTS THAT BITE! We learned how to restore native food sources using native plants, the importance of edible natives, and EVERYONE walked away with a native P***y Willow cutting!

The spring is a great time of the year to plant new trees. Trees add a lot to your property.

****Amazing deal**** A tree farm we work with has some fairly large shade trees they are looking to sell before the end of the month. These are 3-4" caliper trees. Species include Maple and Oak. Other species are available. The farm has these trees priced at unbelievable low prices. This is the best deal on larger caliper trees we have seen in years.

These trees are being sold at a low cost tree as they are as big as the farm can ball & burlap. Another growing season and these trees will be too large for the normal ball & burlap. They want to move them to make room for a new crop.

Yes, the challenge is real. Some days the best design ideas don't work out when they become lines on a page. They just don't work for one reason or another. Some turn into deleted lines and get forgotten about altogether. Other ideas get changed slightly and turned into great landscapes.

Why should you start your landscaping project with a design?

Part 2

A prime example of why you should start your project with a design is the two recent design projects we have been working. The original idea was great. However, when it was put to scale on paper, it didn't work out the way we had originally thought. Changes had to be made to the original idea to make it work. These changes can easily be made during the design process before things go on to the ground. A design allows you to make changes and ensure things work out the way you want.

A good design shows you how things are going to work before the project starts going in the ground.

Why should you start your landscaping project with a design?

Part 1

A design gives you exact specifications, details, and a complete plant list. A good design will show you spatial relation so you can see how your space will work. You will see the finished product before it goes into the ground. You will see how it works. With a design you will be able to make changes before things go in the ground.

Once you have a design package, you can then get bids for your project based on the same set of specifications. This prevents confusion. All bids are based on the same specs that way they are truly comparable.
