Hydroseeding started with the advent of the Public Hwy building projects of the 30's and 40's. It was originally more straw blowing but soon became more effective mixing mulch with water in a tank. Hence the term "Hydroseeding" The term "Hydroseeder" is a patented term by The Finn Corporation. Essentially it is a method of seed propagation were water, seed, fertilizer, mulch and a product called tackifier are mixed in a tank and sprayed out under pressure onto the surface of the ground. The wood fiber or mulch helps to hold the material in place and resist erosion. The tackifier acts as a low grade natural glue to lubricate through the pump system and once applied, dries to adhere to the ground and wood fibers. We only use wood fiber as it has a higher tensile strength and resist the effect of wind and rain better than other materials such as straw or recycled newspaper. The wood fiber allows air and water to flow through and keep soil moist for more even seed germination. It is true that any surface sprayed with this material can germinate seed, provided it is kept moist. That includes a telephone pole or even a car. More photos coming soon.
