This bird flew for eleven days straight without landing once. No food. No water. No sleep in the way we understand it. Just wings, beating over open ocean, for more than a week and a half.
The bird is a bar-tailed godwit, and the individual tagged B6 shattered the record for the longest non-stop flight ever recorded by any animal, crossing from Alaska to Tasmania in a single unbroken journey. To grasp what that means, imagine running back-to-back marathons, without stopping, for eleven days. That is roughly the metabolic feat this bird performs, except it does it while flapping the entire time.
How is this even possible? Before departure, the godwit transforms its own body into a flying fuel tank. It gorges itself, nearly doubling its body weight in fat. Then, in one of the most extreme biological changes in nature, it shrinks its own internal organs. Its liver, kidneys, and even parts of its digestive system atrophy, because it will not eat for the entire trip and does not need them. It essentially cannibalizes its own guts to make room for fuel and reduce weight.
It carries no map, yet it navigates thousands of kilometers of featureless ocean with pinpoint accuracy, likely using the stars, the Sun, Earth's magnetic field, and an internal sense we still do not fully understand. It waits for the right weather, launching itself onto favorable winds like a surfer catching the perfect wave.
And it may sleep on the wing. Scientists believe birds like this can shut down one half of their brain at a time, resting one hemisphere while the other keeps flying, a trick that lets them stay airborne and alert across an entire ocean.
There is no room for error. There are no islands to rest on across much of that route. If it miscalculates its fuel or hits the wrong storm, there is nowhere to land, and it will not survive. Every one of these flights is a life-or-death gamble made by an animal weighing about as much as a can of soda.
