The Adams Residence — First Look

The house rises with the wooded land. Layered flat and sloped roofs move together, opening to the southern sun and settling low at the entry and patio.

After a slow, purposeful arrival, the front door opens to a view of the courtyard beyond.

A raw, earthy palette fills the outlines of dark, disciplined lines.

As Louis Kahn said, the corner is the place of greatest conflict. Here, some corners stay. Others disappear.

Additions to existing homes can be tricky, but we love a good design challenge. Our clients envisioned a covered outdoor living area complete with a fireplace, dining space, and plenty of room to relax with family and friends.

We studied the existing home carefully and uncovered one clear solution that accomplished every goal. The new covered deck extends the family’s indoor living into the backyard, while the roof structure creates a graceful transition between the comfort of the interior and the openness of the outdoors — offering protection from the elements without closing off the view. No need to modify existing windows here.

This simple, thoughtful design has completely transformed how the family gathers, unwinds, and enjoys the outdoors — all year long

Presenting The Varnsen –
Breaking ground at 1220 Rice Rd in Elma, NY this summer, our third spec home is a fresh take on mid-century modern design.
This one is all about flexing our understanding of clean, rational geometries while still having a little fun. A stone intersection defines the entry, framing nature and acts as a divider between the public and private volumes. This same stone element carries through to a central fireplace, anchoring the main living space and setting the tone for a warm, inviting atmosphere.
Large windows, subtle curves, framed arches, and an earthy-yet-funky palette bring a touch of warmth and personality, creating impressive moments throughout. To top it all off, the massing frames a serene courtyard with a fruit-bearing tree – a quiet, contemplative space that invites a connection to nature.
We’re excited to watch this one come to life. Stay tuned.

When we design, we reflect deeply on the concepts that shape our work.
So, what is The Cartwright all about?

It’s a home grounded in place, yet expansive in spirit. Anchored by strong horizontal lines, its form gestures outward like a prairie—reaching into the landscape while drawing its surroundings inward, shaping space for life to gather and grow.
Rooted in Elma’s farmland, inspired by Buffalo’s camaraderie, and shaped by the freedom of the American landscape, The Cartwright reflects a layered sense of belonging—organic in form, open in purpose, and quietly bold in character.
