Thinking About Replacing Your Furnace with a Heat Pump in Elgin?

Most Elgin homes heat with a gas furnace, and it works right up until the day it doesn't. Then you're making a fast decision on a system you'll live with for fifteen to twenty years. A conversion is worth understanding before that day arrives.

A heat pump handles heating and cooling with one system. In summer it works the way your air conditioner already does. In winter it reverses, pulling heat from outdoor air and moving it indoors. No combustion, no flame, no flue.

Compass designs three conversion paths for Elgin homes:

- Ducted heat pump, if your ductwork is in reasonable condition
- Dual fuel, keeping the gas furnace as automatic backup for the coldest stretches
- Ductless, for homes on boilers, radiators, or electric baseboard, with no walls opened

Do they work in Illinois winters? Yes. Cold-climate heat pumps produce heat well below freezing. Output does decline as temperatures drop, which is why sizing and design matter, and why dual fuel is our most common Elgin recommendation.

Most Homeowners in our area claim only one energy efficiency rebate. There are usually two.

Nearly every home we work in is served by ComEd for electricity and Nicor Gas for natural gas. Those are two separate rebate programs, with different rules and different deadlines. You can claim from both on the same project, and most homeowners don't.

Dual-fuel systems show this best. A heat pump paired with a high-efficiency gas furnace — the setup we install most often in this climate — can earn a ComEd heat pump discount and a Nicor furnace rebate on the same job.

The two programs work differently. ComEd's discount is applied at the point of sale by a heat pump-trained contractor, with no form to fill out. Nicor is claimed by application after the work is done, and there's a clock: applications are due within 90 days of installation. A March install has a June deadline, not a January one. That's the one people miss.

ComEd's heat pump discount is also tiered. Stepping up to a higher efficiency tier can increase what you receive by more than the equipment upgrade costs. It's worth running the numbers before you sign anything.

One thing that did go away: the federal tax credit for heat pumps and furnaces expired December 31, 2025. Installations in 2026 don't qualify. If a quote you're reviewing assumes that credit, ask for new numbers.
