Today I had the opportunity to tour the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC) and get an up-close look at what happens after recyclables and waste leave the curb.

From educational outreach and public engagement to the massive sorting and processing systems operating behind the scenes, it was impressive to see the scale, technology, and dedication involved in managing Rhode Island’s waste stream responsibly.

The tour was a great reminder that sustainability is more than a buzzword—it takes infrastructure, innovation, and collaboration to turn discarded materials into valuable resources and reduce environmental impact.

Thank you to the RIRRC team for sharing your knowledge and for the important work you do every day to help keep Rhode Island clean and sustainable.

Every bottle, can, cardboard box, and recycled material has a story—and this is where many of those stories continue.
