So, it's officially the Holiday Season, and you may assume with all the rain we've had through the fall up until recently has replenished our reservoirs from last year's drought. That couldn't be further from the truth. Many of our reservoirs are only at 35% capacity as of early December. We're still in a drought....even though it's winter. Remember, our trees and shrubs are about 80% water and irrigation systems (if you have one) are winterized. So when those 40+ degree days come around in Jan and Feb, don't forget to head outside for a bit and give your evergreens and plants some water. Loss of moisture is the main reason plants get damaged and crack in winter and display brown/bronze foliage come springtime once everything starts growing again.......

If you've been enjoying the pleasant temperatures the past couple of weeks, and the brisk mornings, don't get too used to it. NOAA just released their 3 month outlook for Sept-Nov and we're supposed to have temperatures 50-60% above average, with near average rainfall. So basically, a similar fall to 2024. Make sure you continue to water your lawns and plants regularly to make sure seed can germinate, and to make sure plants have enough moisture in them to make it through winter when water supplies are frozen. Lack of fall watering (right up until late Nov) is the #1 cause of winter damage on trees, shrubs and evergreens once spring arrives.

If you're getting set for sweater weather with Labor Day weekend marking the unofficial close of summer, the just released three-month long-range outlook from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center may come as a surprise.Bottom line: expect…

Here's a great article and update from Amy Rowe at Rutgers Cooperative Extension that explains how bad our drought was in fall and winter prior to all the rainfall we received in May. Many trees, shrubs and evergreens suffered this spring coming out of dormancy due to lack of moisture within the plants themselves before heading into winter when water supplies are typically frozen in the soil, or in this case, absent.

Did you know that Soil Temperatures play a key role in the germination of grassy and broadleaf weeds, and also turfgrass diseases? 2025 has been an extremely unpredictable year so far as you'll see by the Blue line on the graph. Have your Hydrangeas not met your expectations the past 5-7yrs? Have they struggled in summer and produced less blooms. Climate is most likely to blame. Northern NJ has moved up to Climate Zone 6b, and we'll most likely be classified as Zone 7 (Virginia/Delaware/Maryland) in the next 5-7yrs. Here's an article from the Farmingdale Observer that explains how rising temperatures are forcing landscape designers and garden enthusiasts to reconsider planting Hydrangea and replacing them with more heat and drought tolerate plants......

The world of gardening is changing rapidly, and one beloved plant is bearing the brunt of climate change impacts. Hydrangeas, once the crown jewels of many gardens with their lush blooms and generous foliage, are increasingly struggling to survive in today's altered climate conditions. Professional....
