Unfortunately this is a great example of what happens when you have mulch volcanos around your trees. The tree sprouts a secondary roots system that wraps it self around the trunk and causes a girdling root/roots. This does not allow the trunk to grow properly and can cause total failure at the ground like this Little leaf Linden (Tilia cordata).
