🔨 Back to 6A in Sandwich!🔨

Back in June, we had the opportunity to work on this incredible 260-year-old barn along Route 6A in Sandwich. At the time, we wrapped up the main barn with a new roof and classic white cedar shingles, with plans to return once the new addition was ready.

Well, we’re back!

The framer has since completed a new garage/storage addition on the back of the barn, and we came back to finish it off — roofing the new addition and siding it in white cedar shingles to complement the original structure.

It’s pretty cool to come back to a project like this and see the next phase take shape. Buildings this old don’t get many chances to be updated while still keeping their character, and we’re proud to play a small part in keeping this piece of Sandwich history standing, protected, and functional for years to come.

All wrapped up here in Truro! 🔨🏡

We put the finishing touches on this one today with new exterior lights, gutters, a brand-new front door, and an Andersen storm door—and just like that, we’re done!

This one was a fun one for sure, and I’m definitely going to miss working in Truro. Always a great place to work, and we’re proud of how this one came together.

🔨 MAJOR EXTERIOR OVERHAUL IN NORTH TRURO! 🏠
We recently wrapped up the main phase of a full exterior facelift on a 1980s build, and the transformation is night and day! The homeowner wanted a clean, low-maintenance setup, choosing James Hardie lap siding on the front face paired with pre-stained bleaching oil shingles on the cheeks.

As a lifelong Cape Cod local, I take a lot of pride in our craftsmanship and helping fellow locals protect their homes against the harsh salt air and coastal weather. 🌊

Here’s a breakdown of the scope on this project:

Siding & Cheeks: Stripped the old white cedar shingles down to the sheathing on the front face and cheeks. Installed James Hardie Pearl Gray clapboard on the front per the owner’s request, and SBC bleaching oil shingles on the cheeks.

Roofing & Skylights: Tore off the old roof and installed CertainTeed Weatherwood shingles with a new ridge vent, along with 3 new VELUX skylights equipped with solar-powered blinds. ☀️

Trim & Ventilation: Swapped out all the old wood trim for low-maintenance AZEK across the rakes, fascia, frieze, and corner boards, and added new soffit vents throughout.

Smart Window Details: Built custom AZEK trim around windows that didn't have any trim before. We detailed these specifically so if the windows ever need to be replaced down the road, the trim can easily be popped off and reinstalled without tearing into the surrounding siding!

Accent Windows: Installed 2 new Andersen octagon windows.

Almost 100% wrapped up—just waiting on the new front door, storm door, seamless gutters, and for the electrician to hang the outdoor lights! ⚡

Before & After – Eastham, MA

Another transformation completed right here in Eastham!

For this project, we:
• Stripped off the existing worn-out 3-tab asphalt shingles.
• Installed new CertainTeed Landmark shingles in Georgetown Gray for a clean, updated look and long-lasting protection.
• Removed the old pine rake boards and replaced them with low-maintenance AZEK PVC trim, which won’t rot, split, or require the same upkeep as wood.

The new roof and trim not only give this home a fresh appearance but also provide durable protection against the Cape Cod weather for years to come.

🇺🇸 We snuck one more project in before the Fourth of July weekend!

This beautiful little saltbox cottage just off Route 6A in Brewster, only a short walk from the beach, is sporting a brand-new roof and ready for many more years of Cape Cod weather.

At the homeowner’s request, we installed 100% ice and water barrier across the entire roof deck for maximum protection, then finished it with CertainTeed Landmark Pro architectural shingles for outstanding durability and curb appeal.

🔨 From Hidden Rot to Cape Cod Classic! 🔨
What started as a call to look at a few signs of rotting clapboards and woodpecker damage turned into a massive, much-needed rescue mission for this garage.

🔍 The Backstory
The homeowner noticed rot on some clapboards, water tables, and corner boards. Once we got a closer look, we discovered the root cause: multiple windows and water tables had been improperly flashed during the original build. After discussing options, we agreed the best move was to strip the clapboards and see exactly what was going on underneath.

🛑 The Shocking Discovery
The amount of rotted plywood and framing hidden behind the siding was unreal. Water had been leaking in for years. We also removed six old, worn-out windows that the homeowner no longer used, closing up the wall to make the structure solid and energy-efficient.

✨ The Restoration
We didn't just patch it up; we rebuilt it to last:
Structural Repairs: Fixed all rotted framing and plywood sheathing.

Proper Weatherproofing: Correctly flashed all windows and water tables to keep the elements out.

Rot Prevention: Installed brand-new corner boards and water tables using Azek trim to guarantee woodpeckers and moisture won't stand a chance in the future.

Upgrades: Added new frieze boards (which the building completely lacked before).

The Finish: Wrapped the entire garage in beautiful, classic white cedar shingles per the customer’s request.

Now, this garage is structurally sound, completely weather-tight, and matches the classic Cape style perfectly.

Job in progress!
The clapboards don’t look in that bad of shape, right? Well, look what was underneath. Woodpeckers and some rotted looking clapboards told the story that we couldn’t see. This place had been leaking for a while, but you wouldn’t have known unless you took some stuff apart.
🔨 The Game Plan:
Stripping all the clapboards
Re-plywooding and framing where necessary
Replacing all the trim with PVC
Deleting a few windows
Properly flashing all windows and water tables
Installing new white cedars
💡 Pro-Tip: Usually, if your pine trim is showing signs of rot and it’s not at the bottom of your corner boards, then there is something else going on.
We will have updates when we are done. But feel free to reach out if you think that you might be getting water in your building. Prevent damage before it gets to this point!

🔨 Giving History a Face-Lift on 6A in Sandwich! ✨
We recently wrapped up work on this beautiful, 200+ year-old historic barn located right along Route 6A in Sandwich.
To ensure this structure stands strong for another two centuries, we partnered with a great framer who took care of the heavy lifting—shoring up structural issues and replacing a bunch of old, rotted sheathing.
From there, the team at By The C Carpentry took over the exterior:
We stripped the roof down, re-plywooded the entire surface, and installed durable CertainTeed Landmark shingles.
We wrapped the building and installed fresh, classic white cedar shingles to give it that timeless Cape Cod look.
We will be back to finish up the back of the building once the new addition is added on!
