Shutter restoration on the historic Penelope Barker House is in full swing here at Down East Wood Works.

A steady stream of custom-built doors has been leaving the shop lately, the boss’s new ride is getting a fresh paint job, and we’ve just started the process of a complete shutter restoration for the historic Penelope Barker House in downtown Edenton.

A large batch of custom 5-panel and 4-panel doors is coming together in the shop. This has been a fun project—we’re replicating the original doors throughout our client’s home using traditional mortise-and-tenon construction, keeping the character of the originals while building them to last.

No two days in the shop ever look quite the same. Various forms of architectural millwork—from exterior balusters and louvered cypress gable vents to stacks upon stacks of milled poplar for the large number of interior doors we’re currently building. Couple that with a few furniture repairs and a little of this and that, and that’s how we do it here at Down East Wood Works.

It took me a couple of years to understand it.

The reason we do what we do is simple: we care.

We care about the client who trusted us with their project. We care about their vision and the responsibility of bringing it to life. We care about the craftsmen who came before us and the standards they left behind. We care about the details, even the ones no one else will ever notice.

For a long time, I wondered why I was willing to put so much time and effort into a piece that most people would never fully appreciate. Then I realized it isn’t about recognition.

It’s about respect.

Respect for the client. Respect for the craft. Respect for the work.

Being a craftsman is personal. It’s emotional. Every one of us carries it a little differently, but I think the one thing we all have in common is that we care.

Sometimes it takes a couple of years to understand that.

A lot has been going on around the shop lately. From custom doors and cabinetry to unique one-off projects, it’s been another busy week here at Down East Wood Works.

Before everyone heads off to celebrate tomorrow, we just wanted to take a moment to wish you and your family a safe and happy Independence Day.
