Is this really the same breaker?

This old Westinghouse Electric Corporation DB-25 circuit breaker came into our shop in rough shape: bent and broken mechanism components, years of grime, dried-out lubrication, illegible labels, and an outdated trip unit.

We gave it a new life:
-Repaired bent and broken mechanism components
-Cleaned and re-lubricated all moving parts
-Refinished the breaker (powder coat, zinc plating, and black oxide)
-Installed a new Utility Relay Company AC-Pro II trip unit
-Adjusted, tested, and returned it to manufacturer specifications

Now it’s ready to keep doing its job—protecting equipment, uptime, and people—for years to come.

Have you ever seen a Pringle switch from the bottom like this?
Many users only have the opportunity to see the handle on the outside of the cubicle it lives in. Here, you get a unique perspective on the use of Belleville stacks instead of springs, as well as the heavy copper contacts that withstand decades of operations. It is no question why these switches are so valued by their users. Mix robust components with a quality rebuild, and you have reliability you can depend on.

Have you ever seen what is inside a circuit breaker?
While circuit breakers seem complicated, they all work the same way. In this LK breaker mechanism currently being assembled in our shop, you can see some of the components - such as the motor, the ratchet, and the cam - which work together to store energy in large springs that will be attached later. When this energy is released, much like a mousetrap, the circuit is rapidly broken. Any binding in this mechanism caused by dry lubrication, damaged parts, and sticky debris can interfere with this process, leading to breakers that get stuck open or closed, slow current breaks allowing electrical arcs to form which can further damage the breaker, and likely additional damage further down the power system line. A rebuild is a cost-effective, cover-all solution to keeping power systems, equipment, and people safe.

Having a preventative maintenance schedule is critical to electrical power system safety. We see it regularly: facilities failing to allocate the proper time and budget to have their equipment serviced, resulting in catastrophic failures, costly emergency calls, expensive downtimes, and serious injuries. The NFPA 70B recommends having electrical equipment tested every 3 to 5 years. Breakers don’t fail on schedule — but proactive maintenance helps prevent failures when operational continuity matters most.

Summer is right around the corner, and with the rising heat comes the rising risk for corrosion from humidity. Have your substations tested to be sure that they are in tip top shape and don't interfere with your production during the busy months.

04/29/2022

Is your substation old and run down? Are your circuit breakers constantly tripping and failing? Are you hesitant about getting brand new ones for fear of reliability duo to modern cheaper design or lack of budgetary freedom? Are you tired of bare minimum repairs that leave your equipment at risk?
These issues have been rampant in the breaker industry for decades and are becoming exponentially relevant. Companies lack the necessary budget for replacement and the electrical repair industry is finding it increasingly difficult to keep up with the demand.
That's where North Star Power comes in. We have taken a look at all of the issues within electrical repair and modernized the process. Our on-site testing team is able to conduct full spectrum accurate testing of your equipment to give you peace of mind. Low and medium voltage circuit breakers, switches, and MCC buckets that do not pass our inspection come back to our shop and are given a total rebuild. They are sent back to you in condition that is not just brand new, but better than new, and rebuilt to last keeping your equipment protected and money in your pocket.
