Here is the final restoration from the Bennie E Lane collection my father in law sent me. This entire project has been tons of fun for me because of the fact that Bennie was my daughter’s great grandfather and a fellow New Orleans Fireman. It turns out we even worked in the same district and in some of the same fire houses.

This plane is the Seargent 306-16 with adjustable mouth. It was the most difficult to work on but the one I think turned out the best. It is missing a blade, but I’ve got an idea where I can get one.

Thanks to Cecilia Louapre Taylor and Henri M Louapre for all the information and the tools themselves.

I’ll post photos of the rest of the restorations in the comments below.

Working on a restoration of a very old and rusty bit brace. It is an old fashioned hand drill. Because of the wooden handles, I’ve decided not to soak this in rust remover. All the shine will come with the power of a bastard file and sandpaper. Should be very satisfying when complete.

Many thanks to my father in law Henri. He sent me box of rusty tools that belonged to his grandfather. There are few things that thrill me more. I love to clean them up and bring the life back into them. With the old-timey tools, the battery is always charged. The cord is always long enough, and they will outlive us all.

I’m not going to name any names, but someone at the Houser house gave my favorite board some heavy abuse. A hot pan of bacon was placed on top. The beauty of these boards is that the board can be sanded down and resurfaced to look brand new. This board is ready to go for a lifetime.
