MYTH: “My system is underground, heavy rain can’t hurt it.”
FACT: Heavy rain can absolutely affect your septic system. When storms saturate the soil, your drain field may not be able to absorb wastewater properly. Floodwater can even fill the tank and push sewage back toward your home.
If your yard floods or becomes heavily saturated, cut back on water use until the ground has had time to dry out.

MYTH: A little septic smell is just part of owning a septic system.

FACT: A healthy septic system shouldn’t regularly smell! If you’re noticing unpleasant odors in or around your home, your system could be telling you that something needs attention.

Septic odors can come from something as simple as a dried-out P-trap or blocked vent stack, but they can also be a sign that your system is overdue for pumping or maintenance. Ignoring the smell won’t make the underlying problem go away—and catching an issue early can help prevent a much bigger headache later.

Before cooking grease ever reaches your drain, try the coffee-can trick.

Pour cooled cooking grease into an empty can, let it harden, and toss it in the trash. Grease that goes down the drain can solidify in your pipes, contribute to clogs, and create problems for your septic system.

Remember: trash the grease, not the drain.

MYTH: Fall leaves piling up over your septic system don’t matter, right? Not necessarily!

A thick layer of leaves and debris over your drain field can trap moisture and interfere with proper drainage. Over time, this can prevent your system from working as efficiently as it should.

Keeping your drain field clear of leaves and debris can help protect your system. Rake the area regularly throughout the fall and consider scheduling an inspection before winter arrives.
