🏌️♂️ Doing More with Less: The Drought-Tolerant Lawn. ⛳️🌿
I’m out in my own yard today because high-performance turf isn't about how much water you throw at it-it's about resource efficiency. The standard playbook says to water constantly when it gets hot, but true drought tolerance is built by combining a few critical, intentional practices.
Sometimes lawns can do good when they’re compacted, but that’s a lot of luck. If you take care of it the right way, your lawn can be beautiful, very tough, and economical. If you want to do more with less and require less water to get through the brutal Oklahoma summer, you have to manage the whole system:
Mowing High: I use the gauge on the LawnCaddie cap to keep my Bermuda at 2” (and 3” for Fescue). This creates a taller canopy that naturally shades the soil, blocking evaporation and keeping the ground cool. ☀️☂️
The Right Applications at the Right Time: We prioritize a more natural approach and use natural alternatives whenever possible to build a foundation. Feeding the lawn what it needs, exactly when it needs it, builds an athlete that can handle kids, pets, and heat stress. 🏃♂️🐾
Water Deep, Not Daily: Watering every day or every other day is a liability. If you're going to water, you water deep to train the roots to dive down. I use the LawnCaddie to verify that moisture is actually penetrating 6 inches deep so you see exactly how the soil is absorbing the water. 🧱📏
We’ve been living by this "more with less" philosophy since our days in the pasture. It’s about working with nature to build a lawn that can actually stand up to the elements on fewer resources.
