Are your trees showing signs of stress? With a string of triple digit temps, the effects are becoming noticeable. Broadcast irrigation saturates the top 3 inches of soil which promotes surface roots and root decay. Trees need drip irrigation to pull the roots deeper into the soil. Don’t use w**d and feed around trees, trees are w**ds in the eyes of w**d and feed. Mulch 3 inches deep and keep the mulch off the stem of the tree to regulate the soil temperature and retain moisture. (Also helps to prevent string trimmer damage)

Mature old Elms are our favorite trees. The best time to treat and protect your majestic Elms is coming up quickly. Let’s protect these old Elms for the next generation! Plus, treatment is a lot cheaper than a removal!

Didn't Dutch Elm Disease already kill all our elms back in the 1970s?

Dutch Elm Disease (DED) is today's species of concern for Kansas, as we share our perspective on National Invasive Species Awareness Week with a different invasive species focus each day.

One of the great misnomers within forestry is "Dutch" elm disease. There is in fact nothing Dutch about it, other than the fact this this disease of likely Asian origin was first described as a killer of elms in Holland in 1921. It's been killing native elm trees in our forests and cities in Kansas since 1957, and although the loss of many huge elms in subsequent decades caught our attention and paved the way for Community Forestry programs across the country, we still have DED around today killing elms.

There are many elms that still shade farms, streets, and homes today, especially in areas of Kansas with a low density of tree cover. However, the stately American elms (and their related native cousins) are still susceptible to this beetle-spread disease to this day. But we don't have to surrender our elms to this disease, with options ranging from fungicide injections for high-value trees, to many resistant cultivars available, to simply taking steps to ensure we don't spread the disease by moving firewood or pruning/wounding elms unless necessary.

You can find more information about Dutch Elm Disease, and ways to manage it (including resistant and recommended cultivars), on the KFS website here: https://www.kansasforests.org/forest_health/current_pests/dutchelmdisease.html

We had a fun time preserving a tree with a large crack today! Luckily the homeowner put straps around the trunk to save it until we could get there. Just need to go back to put a bolt through the trunk once our 4ft drill bit gets off a ship somewhere….
