🌲Fun Fact Wednesday🌲

Evergreens do more than look good in winter. Did you know landscape architects often use evergreen trees as natural windbreaks?

When placed strategically, evergreens can:
✅ Block cold winter winds
✅ Reduce heating costs
✅ Protect outdoor living spaces
✅ Prevent snowdrifts in unwanted areas

They don’t just add color — they add function.

🌨️ Fun Fact Wednesday! ❄️

Did you know that the salts we use to melt snow can sometimes do more harm than good — especially around your plants? 🤯

While it’s tempting to reach for the rock salt after a big snow, heavy sodium‑chloride use near plant beds and vulnerable vegetation (think evergreens and shrubs) can lead to salt buildup in the soil, damaging roots and stressing your plants throughout the winter and into spring. 🌿

Tip: Use pet‑ and plant‑friendly de‑icers, or apply salt sparingly and focus on high‑traffic walkways instead of garden edges. Your plants will thank you! 🌱

🎄 Fun Fact Wednesday 🎄
The first public Christmas tree in the U.S. wasn’t just about holiday cheer — it was about transforming public space.

In 1912, Madison Square Park in NYC lit up an evergreen, making it the first outdoor, electrically lit public Christmas tree in the country.

Why does this matter for landscape architecture? Because it turned a park into a gathering space, using seasonal planting and lighting to shape experience — a concept that still influences how we design public spaces today.

From ancient evergreens symbolizing endurance…
To winter plazas that bring communities together…
The Christmas tree has always been more than just decoration.
It’s landscape design — with lights. ✨

❄️ Fun Fact Wednesday!❄️

Snow doesn't just make landscapes look magical — it actually changes how they sound.
Fresh snow can absorb up to 60% of ambient noise, creating that peaceful, hushed feeling we all associate with winter wonderlands. For landscape architects, this isn’t just poetic — it’s powerful.
Designing outdoor spaces that incorporate natural acoustic shifts (like snow cover or evergreen buffers) can transform how people feel in a space.

So the next time you step into a snowy park and everything feels extra calm... you’re literally hearing less of the world.

Fun Fact Wednesday: Say hello to the Modern Smart Pergola!
Pergolas have come a long way since Ancient Greece. Today, they’re not just aesthetic structures — they’re smart, responsive systems that adjust to your lifestyle.

🌞 Think automated louvers that move with the sun.
🌧 Rain sensors that close the roof before you even grab your umbrella.
👉 Smart-home integration for the ultimate outdoor upgrade.

🌿 Fun Fact Wednesday: Landscape architecture once helped win a war.

In the 1600s, André Le Nôtre — the legendary landscape architect behind the Gardens of Versailles — designed the grounds not just for beauty, but for power projection.

The gardens were so vast and meticulously ordered, they became a symbol of control over nature, reinforcing Louis XIV’s image as the “Sun King.” Even visiting foreign dignitaries felt strategically outmatched — before negotiations even began.

Landscape architecture wasn’t just about beauty...
It was psychological warfare in perfectly trimmed hedges. 😎✂️

🍁Fun Fact Wednesday: Its bulb planting time!

Now’s the time to plant spring bulbs 🌷Planting in November helps your bulbs settle in before winter, so they’re strong, healthy, and ready to bloom beautifully next spring.

Here’s how to do it right:
✅ Don’t plant too early — warm soil can trigger early sprouting.
✅ Plant in clusters or natural drifts for better visual impact.
✅ Top with mulch to lock in moisture and keep weeds down.
✅ Choose a spot with sunlight and good drainage — your bulbs will thank you.
✅ Use a border to separate your bulb zone from different planting areas in the landscape. This ensures the bulbs are not destroyed when they are not in bloom.
