Troy Garage Door Repair — Grinding, Binding, or Cable Problems? A Seized End Bearing May Be the Cause
A garage door that starts grinding, binding, moving unevenly, or throwing a cable may have a problem deeper in the torsion system.
On this recent Troy, IL repair, the garage door rollers had been lubricated, but the torsion end bearing plate had been missed.
Over time, the bearing seized.
When an end bearing no longer turns freely, the torsion tube is forced to rotate against a bearing that has locked up. With every opening and closing cycle, that friction can continue wearing into the torsion tube.
On this door, the tube was eventually cut completely through.
Once the torsion tube separates, the cable drum can drop out of position. That can lead to:
• Garage door cable coming off the drum
• Garage door moving crooked or unevenly
• Garage door binding in the tracks
• Uneven cable tension or cable pickup
• Grinding or metal-on-metal noise near the torsion shaft
• Garage door opener straining to move the door
• Damage to garage door sections if the drum or shaft drops against the face of the door
This is why lubricating only the rollers is not enough.
Garage door maintenance should also include inspection and lubrication of the torsion end bearing plates, springs, hinges, rollers, and other moving components.
A dry or seized end bearing may start as a small maintenance issue, but continued operation can create much larger torsion-system, cable, drum, and door problems.
At Tri County Garage Door Company, we inspect the complete garage door system to find the cause of binding, grinding, loose cables, uneven movement, opener strain, and torsion-system damage.
