⚠ MOFD Grant Program deadline: June 30, 2026 ⚠
If you own a home in Moraga, Orinda, or Canyon, you’re in one of the Bay Area’s highest fire-risk zones — but you also have access to programs that most homeowners don’t know exist.
This guide explains every program available to you right now, what they cover, what they cost (hint: some are completely free), and exactly how to take advantage of them.
Sunshine Gutters & Roofing is your local contractor and guide through every step. We handle the work, the paperwork, and the documentation — so you get every benefit you’re entitled to.
Program 1 — Free Ember-Resistant Gutter Guards
Provided by: Moraga-Orinda Fire District (MOFD) • Cost to you: $0 for the product
MOFD will ship HomeSafe stainless steel mesh gutter guards directly to your home at no cost. These guards prevent embers and debris from collecting in your gutters — one of the most common ways fire spreads to a home.
How it works:
1. You apply online at mofd.org/home-hardening-grant-program (we’ll help you fill it out) 2. MOFD ships the guards to your home in approximately 30 days
3. We install them professionally — you pay only for installation labor
Deadline: June 30, 2026 — this program closes permanently. Apply now.
Program 2 — Ember-Resistant Vent Upgrade (Up to $1,000 Back)
Provided by: MOFD • Reimbursement: Up to $1,000 for product cost
Standard plastic vents are one of the biggest fire vulnerabilities in a home. MOFD will reimburse you for the cost of upgrading to California-approved ember-resistant vents.
How it works:
1. We supply and install OSFM-approved ember-resistant vents
2. We provide you with a clean, itemized invoice (product and labor separated) 3. You submit the invoice to MOFD and receive a reimbursement check for the product cost 4. You pay for installation labor — the product cost comes back to you
Note: New construction and code-mandated remodels are not eligible — retrofits only.
Program 3 — Mandatory Insurance Discount
Required by: California law (CDI “Safer from Wildfires”) • Available: Permanently, after qualifying work
California law requires every homeowner’s insurance company — including the FAIR Plan — to lower your premium when you complete verified fire-hardening improvements. This is not optional for insurers. It’s the law.
Work that qualifies for a discount:
• Metal gutter installation or replacement
• Ember-resistant gutter guard installation
• Class A fire-rated roof replacement
• Ember-resistant vent installation
• Enclosed eave work
Estimated savings:
• $200–$800 per year for gutters and guards alone
• Homeowners combining roof + gutters + vents: typically 20–30% off wildfire premium • Applies to both private insurers and FAIR Plan policies
How it works:
1. We complete your fire-hardening work
2. Within 48 hours, we deliver a complete Wildfire Mitigation Documentation Package 3. You submit it to your insurer and request a rate review – we will guide you through it 4. Your insurer applies the discount — we follow up at 30 days to confirm
Program 4 — The Complete Fire-Hardening Package
The single most effective thing you can do for your home’s fire safety — and your insurance premium — is to do it all in one project:
• Class A fire-rated roof replacement
• Enclosed eave work
• Ember-resistant vent installation (with MOFD reimbursement)
• Metal gutter installation or replacement
• HomeSafe gutter guard installation (free product from MOFD)
One contractor. One project. Every program maximized. You get maximum fire protection, maximum insurance savings, and a single point of contact for everything.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is there really no cost for the gutter guards?
The product is free from MOFD. You pay only for professional installation by Sunshine Gutters & Roofing.
Q: How much will I save on my insurance?
Savings vary by insurer and scope of work, but homeowners doing gutters and guards alone typically save $200–$800 per year. Adding roof, vents, and eaves can reduce your wildfire premium by 20–30%.
Q: Do I have to use a specific contractor?
No — you can use any licensed contractor. However, Sunshine Gutters & Roofing handles the full process from application through documentation, so nothing falls through the cracks.
Q: What if my insurer won’t apply the discount?
They’re legally required to. We provide a complete documentation package that meets CDI requirements. If your insurer pushes back, we’ll help you escalate.
Q: Does my roof have to be replaced to qualify?
No. Gutter guards and vent upgrades qualify on their own. But if your roof is aging, replacing it as part of the same project maximizes both your protection and your insurance savings.
Q: What is the FAIR Plan?
The California FAIR Plan is the state’s insurer of last resort for homeowners who can’t get coverage from private companies. As of November 2025, FAIR Plan policies are also required to apply fire-hardening discounts.
Q: Can I apply for MOFD programs if I live in Walnut Creek?
Only if your address falls within MOFD jurisdiction. Not all Walnut Creek addresses qualify — we’ll verify your exact eligibility.
Q: What happens after the June 30 deadline?
The MOFD Home Hardening Grant Program closes permanently. Free gutter guards and vent reimbursement will no longer be available. The CDI insurance discount program has no deadline.
