You know the trade. You know what good work looks like. Now there’s an opportunity to pass that knowledge on.

IEC El Paso is looking for experienced electricians who can teach more than what’s in the book. How to think through a problem. How to work clean. How to work safe. How to do the job right.

If you’re a licensed Journeyman Electrician and you’ve ever thought, “Somebody needs to teach the next generation how this is actually done,” this might be worth a look.

A sincere thank you to Schneider Electric, Allied Moulded Products, and the IEC Foundation for helping bring new training equipment to the local IEC of El Paso.

Schneider Electric develops electrical distribution and automation technology used in homes, buildings, and industry.

Allied Moulded Products manufactures electrical boxes and enclosures made for real-world installation.

Independent Electrical Contractors Foundation Equipment and Training Grant helps IEC chapters upgrade their labs with tools, equipment, and training resources for hands-on learning.

Together, their support is helping us upgrade our first-year residential and commercial stations and rebuild our third-year industrial motor-control stations.

But our apprentices will not walk into a finished lab and simply begin using them.

They are going to help build them.

Starting in September, apprentices will install, wire, test, and troubleshoot the same workstations they will use to learn the trade. By October, these materials will become working classrooms built in part by the students training on them.

⚡Around here, setting up the lesson is part of the lesson.

Build the station.
Learn the system.
Take the skill to the job.

Since 1968, the local IEC of El Paso has built its program around a simple tradition: electricians training other electricians. That is how Registered Apprenticeship works across the USA: learn on the job, learn in the classroom and learn from someone who knows the trade.

We are looking for licensed Journeyman Electricians in El Paso to serve as apprenticeship instructors.

• At least one year of journeyman experience
• One evening a week
• 5:00 to 9:00 p.m.
• In person
• No teaching experience required

IEC El Paso is proud to welcome Frank C. Nerio to our instructional team.
Frank entered the electrical trade in 1984 and has built more than four decades of experience across commercial and industrial electrical systems, including tenant finish-outs, shell buildings, sports centers and arenas, warehouses, high-rise buildings, substations, and data centers.
He began as an electrical helper and later joined the IEC CenTex apprenticeship program in 1995. Since then, he has served as an apprentice, journeyman electrician, master electrician, lead man, foreman, superintendent, estimator, project manager, and safety manager.
Frank now brings that experience into the classroom with a clear message for the next generation:
“Show me a genuine interest in what I am teaching you and I will teach you everything I possibly can about the electrical industry. All I ask in return is that you teach someone else along the way. In my opinion, this is how we keep the craft alive.”

Things electricians do that somehow get reduced to “pulling wire”:

⚡ Read blueprints.
⚡ Build power systems from the ground up.
⚡ Find problems hidden inside complex systems.
⚡ Install and troubleshoot controls that run entire buildings.
⚡ Know how to work safely with power that does not forgive mistakes.
⚡ Keep hospitals, schools, homes, and businesses working.

So yeah. It’s a little more than pulling wire.

Most people know what an electrician is.

Far fewer know what it takes to become one.

Apprentice. Journeyman. Master. These are not just job titles. They represent different levels of experience, licensing, independence, and responsibility within the electrical profession.

In Texas, the journey to becoming a licensed journeyman electrician includes 8,000 hours of supervised, documented experience and a state examination. Every hour builds the skill. Every stage brings more responsibility. And every master electrician began at the beginning.

This carousel is part of a new IEC El Paso educational series created to explain the electrical industry in plain language, one story at a time.

Because opportunities are easier to imagine when someone finally explains how they work.

Some investments are measured in dollars.

Others are measured in the confidence that grows when an apprentice gets the chance to practice, improve, and master work that once felt out of reach.

IEC El Paso has received a $10,000 Path to Pro Education Grant from The Home Depot Foundation. This support will help strengthen the hands-on training environment where El Paso apprentices develop the skills, discipline, and experience needed to become electricians.

The Path to Pro Education Grants program supports schools and nonprofit organizations working to prepare people for careers in the skilled trades.

To The Home Depot Foundation, thank you for investing in the part of workforce development that is often hardest to see: the repetition, instruction, correction, patience, and persistence that happen before skill looks effortless.
