Hey neighbors — we see a lot of posts asking about roofers, and also a lot of frustration when things don’t go well.
Roofing can be stressful, and unfortunately a bad contractor can turn a small issue into a big mess. I wanted to share a few things that may help anyone who’s getting roof work done or planning to soon.
Here are some simple tips that can really make a difference:
Always get a written estimate that clearly explains what work is being proposed. This helps avoid confusion later.
Don’t allow work to start without a signed contract.
Both parties should sign it, and it should spell out what’s included, what’s not, and the payment schedule.
Do a little homework on the company.
Look for a Google profile and ideally a physical location. While that doesn’t guarantee anything, it does give you somewhere to go if problems come up.
Make sure the contractor is properly registered.
In El Paso, you can verify contractor registration by calling the City One Stop Shop at 915-212-0104.
For neighbors in Santa Teresa or Sunland Park:
Roof replacements in New Mexico require a GB-98 license. A licensed contractor can legally pull permits — always make sure the license is active.
If your roof is part of an insurance claim, be prepared to pay your deductible.
In Texas, paying your deductible is required by law. If someone offers to waive it or “help with it,” that’s usually a warning sign.
• Trust your gut.
If something feels off — even just one thing — it’s okay to pause or walk away.
Roofing is a big deal, and asking questions upfront can save a lot of stress later.
We hope this helps someone here. If you ever have questions about roofing or want clarification on any of this, feel free to reach out.
