Do you have Hemlock trees on your property? Do they look like this? Pictured here are a couple Eastern Hemlock trees that reside in Skaneateles, NY. On the branches of these trees are small white organisms clustered at the base of the needles. Those small white clusters are Hemlock Wooly Adelgid insects. HWA can damage and kill an Eastern Hemlock tree in as little as three years. The NYS Hemlock Initiative, an organization created by Cornell University researchers, has collected a wealth of information about Eastern Hemlock trees, why they are so important to the Skaneateles Lake watershed, how HWA impacts them and how to help the fight against these insect pests.
