🏡 Built By Murray is on the hunt for a lot!

We're looking for the right piece of land — on or off market — here in northeastern North Carolina to build a spec house or two.

Now, don't get us wrong: custom homes are who we are and where we're headed. Designing and building homes around our clients' lives is what we love, and that's not changing. But we get asked all the time, "Can we walk through one of your homes?" — and the honest answer is that our clients live in them! A spec build gives us a chance to open the doors and let folks see firsthand the quality, craftsmanship, and standards that go into every home we build.

So if you have a lot you'd consider selling, or know someone sitting on land in Perquimans, Pasquotank, Chowan, Camden, or Currituck County — we'd love to hear from you.

A beautiful piece of land can feel like the beginning of everything you have been planning.

Then you learn the septic area sits where the garage was supposed to go. The driveway entrance needs to move. The building site holds water after heavy rain. Public sewer does not reach the property, and the utility lines are farther from the future home than anyone expected.

Buying land to build a home in Elizabeth City, NC involves far more than checking the acreage and asking whether residential construction is allowed.

In our latest article, we explain what buyers should investigate before purchasing a custom home lot, including zoning, setbacks, surveys, septic suitability, utility access, flood risk, drainage, driveway approval, coastal review, deed restrictions, and site-preparation costs.

The goal is not to find a flawless property. It is to understand the property well enough to know what it can support, what compromises may be required, and how the land will affect the total construction budget.

A little investigation before closing can prevent years of planning from being shaped by a problem that was there from the beginning.

Choosing a home builder can feel simple until the proposals arrive and every price includes something different.

One builder may include site preparation, permits, and design support. Another may leave those costs outside the estimate. A low starting number can become much less attractive once utilities, drainage, finish selections, and change orders are added.

For homeowners planning to build in Elizabeth City or the surrounding Northeastern North Carolina communities, the right questions can reveal far more than a portfolio ever will.

Our latest article explains how to compare home builders in Elizabeth City, NC, including what to ask about licensing, lot evaluation, flood and drainage concerns, allowances, communication, permits, changes, and warranties.

You will also learn why the house should be designed around the property, what needs to be confirmed before buying land, and how to recognize a proposal that leaves too much unanswered.

A custom home is a major commitment. The builder you select should make that commitment easier to understand, not harder.
