Leading Edge Construction is excited to kick off a new renovation project at The Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, CT, transforming a covered pedestrian connector that links two campus buildings. Working alongside Colliers Engineering & Design and Szewczak, Kilty & Fluhr Structural Engineers, P.C., the project includes selective demolition, structural rehabilitation, installation of a new aluminum and glass wall system, and updated building entrances, architectural finishes and lighting.

This renovation presents several unique challenges. The connector is located in a tight space between two existing buildings, requiring careful excavation and foundation work adjacent to occupied structures. The team will also implement a specialized temporary support system to carry the load of the existing structure while new footings, piers, and column bases are installed.

With a limited construction window between graduation and summer programming, coordination and scheduling will be critical to keeping the project on track for completion ahead of the fall semester.

On Sunday, May 31, Leading Edge Construction was proud to sponsor a golf tournament in honor and memory of James Leonardo, known to many as "Jim Bob."

A journeyman electrician, mentor, friend, and father, Bob left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him. He was known for his willingness to help others, share his knowledge with apprentices entering the trade, and bringing a smile to the faces of those around him. His legacy continues through his daughter and the many lives he touched.

The tournament held special meaning for our team, as Jim Bob was a close friend of Leading Edge Construction Owner Todd Lessard. Supporting this event was an opportunity to celebrate his life, honor his memory, and recognize the profound impact he had on so many people.

Jim Bob's passing also serves as an important reminder that struggles are not always visible. Those who knew him remember his sense of humor, positive attitude, and his ability to light up a room. Yet, like many in our industry and communities, he faced challenges that others may never have fully understood.

We believe conversations surrounding mental wellness and su***de awareness are essential. The construction industry is built on strength, resilience, and hard work, but seeking support during difficult times is also a sign of strength. No one should feel they have to face their struggles alone.

We are grateful to everyone who participated in and supported this year's tournament. Together, we honor Jim Bob's memory while continuing to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and supporting one another.

In honor of Historic Preservation Month, we’re pleased to highlight our work at the Comstock Ferre in Wethersfield, CT – one of the oldest heirloom seed companies in the United States. Founded in 1811, Comstock quickly became a trusted name in New England gardening. In 2020, the historic property was sold to the operators of the on-site Heirloom Market, while the seed business continues as a distributor of Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, keeping heritage gardening alive in New England and beyond.

Today, Comstock Ferre is a living history destination where visitors can explore restored barns, offices, and grounds where seeds have been sorted and packed for more than 200 years.

Leading Edge Construction completed the transformation of a 1,200-square-foot greenhouse into a new special events space designed to complement the site’s historic character. The project included construction of a custom tavern and bar featuring preserved fronts from the property’s original seed bins, carefully repurposed to reflect the building’s agricultural history. Paired with the site’s authentic post-and-beam interior and Early American architecture, the renovated space blends historic preservation with new community use that was part of a larger multi-phase expansion.

Historic buildings tell the story of a community, and in Norwich, the Reid & Hughes Building has long been part of that story. Originally constructed in 1888 as the Reid & Hughes Department Store, the landmark property sits at the heart of Norwich’s National Register downtown district.

Leading Edge Construction supported the revitalization of this important structure through grant writing, fund administration, reporting, and project oversight services tied to the $550,000 Community Investment Fund (CIF) 2030 grant program. The redevelopment helped transform the long-vacant building into new market-rate housing with space for minority-owned businesses at street level.

It was an honor to be a part of the revitalization of this historic property, creating new opportunities for the building, and for Norwich, while honoring the character and history that define the community.

As part of Historic Preservation Month, we’re proud to highlight Leading Edge's work on the historic Hazardville Institute in our hometown of Enfield, CT. Constructed in 1869 in the heart of the Hazardville village, the Italianate-style building served generations of residents as a library, meeting hall, classroom, and community gathering place before falling into disrepair in the mid-20th century.

Saved from demolition through the efforts of local preservationists and the Hazardville Institute Conservancy Society, the building remains an important part of Enfield’s history more than 150 years later.

Leading Edge Construction was selected as General Contractor for improvements funded through the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). The project included upgrades to mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and fire alarm systems, completion of restroom facilities, new interior finishes, and installation of an accessible rear entrance ramp. Throughout the work, our team carefully balanced modernization with preservation, ensuring the building’s historic character was maintained while preparing the space for continued community use.

In honor of Historic Preservation Month, we’re proud to highlight Leading Edge Construction’s facade restoration work at Hartford’s historic Cast Iron Building at 241 Asylum Street.

Built in 1873 near Bushnell Park, the building is an example of late-19th century architecture, featuring the decorative cast iron elements that gave the structure its name. Today, the property continues to serve downtown Hartford with ground-floor retail and renovated residential apartments above.

Under the supervision of Serge Lessard, the Leading Edge team completed restoration work that included replacing several decorative column capitals with custom-crafted replicas designed to match the originals. The detail-oriented restoration ensured the historic facade retained its original character and craftsmanship.

Projects like this help preserve the architectural history that defines so many Connecticut communities, while ensuring these buildings remain part of the landscape for generations to come.

We're proud to share that Leading Edge Construction has been selected by Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) Connecticut and the State of Connecticut's Office of Early Childhood (OEC) for the Early Childhood Facilities Construction and Renovation Program.

This program plays an important role in expanding access to safe, high-quality early learning environments across Connecticut, particularly for providers serving under-resourced communities. Our work will focus on helping LISC and applicants define clear project scopes, evaluate feasibility, and identify risks early—so that projects moving forward are well-positioned for successful delivery. The program involves a range of facility types and conditions, often with centers remaining operational during construction, requiring practical guidance and disciplined review.

The effort will be led by Grant Program Manager Scott Lessard and Project Manager Mark Teare. Together, the team will work closely with LISC Connecticut to review applications, assess readiness, and provide technical input that supports informed funding decisions.

We look forward to partnering with LISC Connecticut and the the State of CT on this initiative and to supporting projects that strengthen early childhood facilities across the state.

Leading Edge Construction's Todd Lessard is currently serving on the planning committee for HomeFront, a statewide initiative dedicated to helping lower-income households maintain safe, warm, and dry homes.

HomeFront Program recently brought together volunteers to complete home improvement projects for homeowners who may not have the physical or financial means to do the work themselves. Thanks to a grant from the Town of Enfield, the local chapter will support two homes this year.

A special thank you to the sponsors and participants helping make this effort possible, including CCAA Construction, Miller Oil Company, DRB Electric, RK Miles, W.J. Mountford, the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development, and the John J. and Ethel G. Noble Charitable Trust.

Last Thursday, Leading Edge Construction's Todd Lessard had the opportunity to speak at “Blueprint for the Future,” a half-day event hosted by Junior Achievement of Western MA of Southwest New England (Hartford) at CT State Capital College in Hartford. The program brought together students from Durham High School (District 13) and Capitol Preparatory Magnet School for an engaging introduction to the AEC industry.

Alongside a talented group of industry professionals, Todd helped guide students through both educational presentations and interactive, hands-on activities designed to showcase the collaborative nature of the AEC process.

We’re proud to support opportunities that connect students with skilled professionals that are shaping the future of the industry and helping to inspire the next generation of AEC leaders.

Leading Edge Construction is excited to welcome Mark Teare to the team.

With decades of experience in real estate, project management, and corporate facilities leadership, Mark brings deep expertise across healthcare, commercial, and institutional environments.

Having worked closely with Serge and the Leading Edge team over the years, joining the company was a natural fit. As Mark shared, he is “very excited to be with the small teams; it takes me back to my roots, which is to build things and work with great people.”

Mark is supporting the LISC CT OEC Facilities Construction and Renovation Grant Program, where his strong experience and passion for community development make him a perfect fit. He will lead additional projects including Mastercam, Pfizer capital improvements, Integrated Rehabilitation, and The Ethel Walker School.
