The Louie Bacoat Historic Community Garden: A STEAM Education Project

The Teaching Garden at The Louie Bacoat Historic Community Garden is dedicated to contributing to the sustainability of life within Englewood and beyond. There is NO PLANET B. Our children must teach their children to preserve the one we have. The Louie Bacoat Historic Community Garden is supported and maintained by a Village

of Lifelong Learners who volunteered to participate in STEAM Education at a Community level. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) We support the concept of creating and maintaining a year round School Garden at each School in Englewood. We work towards that end in a partnership with the Englewood Public School District and the Municipality. Children Pre K and beyond are welcome as we share this journey to bring residents closer to nature, while incorporating elements that will promote success in school. We partner with the Schools and members of the Community to help children understand the value of;

- working together as a community,
- preserving the Environment while
- growing their own food,
- eating healthy
- fighting obesity
- malnutrition and
- giving to those less fortunate. Creating Young Scientists with exposure in the following areas of study
- Botany: The Scientific Study of Plants
- Entomology: The Scientific Study of Insects
- Pedology: The Scientific Study of Soil

Everything that we are depends on maintaining a healthy planet. All life depends on the capacity of humans to grow and maintain the land in a clean and healthy way. We are on a quest to improve the Environmental conditions on our School grounds and in our City. We hope to be instrumental in the formation of a sustainable NJ School System. We are encouraging EPSD to take constructive steps towards becoming a United States Department of Education Green Ribbon School District.

Much love for the Farmer. A former student told me that, we as a people are in deep stuff, because they are trying to put us back in the fields. I told him that would be a horrible mistake because, "we don't know s**t about what to do in the field". Keep the Legacy alive John Boyd, Jr.

Growing ginger is easy and rewarding for gardeners looking to try something new. More often than not, it's grown from a ginger rhizome - though you can buy ginger seeds and start it that way, it just takes more time.

If you can provide it with the right conditions and have the patience to wait the ~9 months it takes, you'll be loving your homegrown ginger harvests!

Let's look at the conditions needed for ginger to thrive...

Ginger Growing Conditions

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is in the Zingiberaceae family, and is native to Southeast Asia where it grows in humid tropic and subtropical conditions. These days the wild form no longer exists, but its cultivated form has spread around the world.

Understanding the climate it's cultivated in will inform you as to whether or not ginger can be grown in your environment.

Ginger thrives where it's wet [...]

Succession planting is the key to continual garden harvests all throughout the season. If you're looking to spread your harvests out across the season so you have a steady supply of food coming in from the garden, succession planting is the way!

Let's jump into some of the specifics, as well as some common mistakes and issues you might encounter while getting into garden successions.

What Is Succession Planting?

Succession planting means starting each crop multiple times within the season, rather than all at once.

For instance, radishes are an incredibly quick crop which can go from seed to harvest in as little as 3-4 weeks (depending on variety).

Because a radish plant can't be harvested in stages, once you pull up a radish it's done for the season.

This makes radishes the perfect crop for succession planting, as you can sow a new planting of [...]

Vegetables like other plants need night skies.

A confession: I was a teenage astronomy geek. This hobby that gave me an awareness of how depressing it is to live in a city so brightly lit that you can count the number of stars in the night sky.

Looks like a lot of fun.
