Before replacing your roof, there is one Colorado map you should check.

The Wildland-Urban Interface, commonly called the WUI, includes areas where homes and other development meet or intermingle with grasslands, brush, forests and other wildland vegetation. Colorado’s Wildfire Resiliency Code establishes minimum construction and defensible-space standards for qualifying projects within designated WUI areas.

The interactive maps color classifications consider factors such as vegetation, topography, weather and expected fire behavior. Depending on the property, project scope and locally adopted requirements, the classification may affect roofing materials, roof assemblies, vents, eaves, soffits and other exterior components.

However, the state map should be treated as a starting point - not the final project determination. Local jurisdictions may use an approved local map, adopt amendments or enforce requirements differently. The applicable building department ultimately determines whether the code applies and what must be included in the permitted work.

That is why BRG Builds recommends reviewing the property’s location, jurisdiction and current requirements before finalizing a roofing estimate. Addressing these considerations early can help prevent incomplete estimates, unexpected costs and permitting delays.
