Laughing Goat Botanical Gardens

Laughing Goat Botanical Gardens Building our dream garden, one day at a time. We hope to inspire, educate and delight your senses through education, in beautiful spaces. A. Q. Yes, soon.

A former dairy farm getting a facelift into European-inspired Botanical Gardens for use as a private garden venue for life’s celebrations—bespoke events, weddings, workshops, and educational experiences that unite gardeners and garden lovers alike. On our private, 10-acre now-converted dairy-farm, we use sustainable growing practices to grow better-than-organic plants, flowers, vegetables, herbs,

fruit and seed for our community at large. We believe everyone should have access to beautiful spaces, and seek to create a unique, destination event and pleasure garden. Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. Can we visit your farm and tour your gardens? We are currently not opening our gardens for visitors during this phase of implementing our new gardens, outside of private events or hosted events put on by us. Please see our website and newsletter for upcoming events and activities. When do your flowers bloom? We specialize in peonies, dahlias, perennials, and annuals; along with specimen trees and shrubs that add interest to the garden. Our goal is to create year-round interest in our gardens, but the best time to see things in bloom is Spring - Fall. We have no control over when plants bloom, and so cannot with any specificity tell you when a peony or dahlia blooms, as it is climate and weather dependent. We try to update our social media with happenings, but can never guarantee that a specific plant or variety will be in bloom when you visit us. We truly hope you enjoy what is blooming, and realize that the fleeting nature of a plant's exact bloom time is special and unique. Why do you charge to walk around your gardens? The fee to enter our gardens is a nominal one, and frankly, it is to foster mutual respect for the work we are doing here. We trust you see the value of our vision, and our wanting to share this, thus we need to charge to cover the expenses of allowing the general public on to our property, not the least of which is paying our employees a living wage. We are not funded by grants, subsidies, or any government agencies. It is not inexpensive to do this type of work, and most, if not all, public & private gardens charge a fee. Can I host an event, or get married at Laughing Goat Flower Farm? We are working on developing our multiple sites on the property, which will be able to host different size groups for weddings, memorial services, birthday parties, corporate events, bridal showers, baby showers, family reunions, you name it. We would love to be a part of your special day, and will announce as soon as we are ready to start scheduling. Can we bring our pet? We are sorry, but it has not been a good experience for our resident farm animals and pets to have new and unfamiliar animals in their space. We do ask that you leave your pets at home, for the safety and comfort of farm animals, as well as all of our visiting guests and employees. Where do you sell your flowers? Right here. What we grow on site is available exclusively in our Garden Shop, to our customers. We are not currently shipping our flowers off the farm, and we do not sell any flowers we do not ourselves grow. We love your support, as we are hoping to inspire and educate on what seasonal blooms and product are, that are grown as healthfully as possible. Do you sell your plants? We are a certified nursery in the state of Washington. As such, we sell plants that we grow on property, as well as some from our trusted grower partners. We do not sell our peony plants that are in the ground, but can order in roots. We are taking a break from selling dahlia tubers. If there is a specific plant you are looking for, please let us know, and we will be happy to grow it for you (if we can) or try to find it for you.

The one post I didn't want to write.

It's the end of an era for us.

We've had goats since 2012. Our first 2 were Edmond (Ed-man) and Lou. Then came the 5 Doelings. Next Babs and her 2 girls rescued from a herd that came from I don't even know where, but it's one of those operations that just move herds around until they sell them for meat. The final 4 to enter the herd was the Polka Dot Crew.

Along the way, Lou went to live with horses, as he wasn't people friendly. Ed was the sole man amongst the ladies. We think he rather liked that, even though he was neutered, he still thought he was the Man, and that had some funny antics. We also rehomed Babs daughters, as both had horns, and the rest of my herd did not. Me being gored in the thigh with a horn tip while doing hoof trims was the deciding factor. That, and constantly getting their heads and horns out of fencing. Oof. What I didn't realize at that time, was that I should have kept them all together, and I'm a bit sad at my naivety.

Slowly, the herd aged out, and different ailments, many vet visits, anxious days and nights, and they dwindled down to the final 2: Valentine and Ray Ray. Ray Ray was always shy, and while I finally got her to come up to take treats, I still could barely even tough her. I made plans for when Valentine, who is 12, passed, for Ray Ray to be moved into a herd so she wasn't alone. I figured we still had a bit of time...

Ray Ray decided it was her time to go first. Shocking and unexpected, absolutely no signs of any illness or disease, we think she was spooked by a predator in the early morning.

And then there was one. My sweet Valentine. Born on Valentine's Day, bottle raised, friendly, alone. I could tell she was lonely already, and I reached out to see if they were willing to take my senior lady.

Turns out, her sweetness and friendly, soft nature were in her favor, and she was so happily welcomed into a herd of senior goats, happily living out their retirement years together.

Was I sad to see her go? Absolutely. Am I still sad? You bet I am.

But, I did the best thing for my last Goat, to give her a life surrounded by other Goats, and being cared for by the absolute best person to do the job, and I have zero regrets about that decision, as hard as it was.

So now, the question I get asked over and over: will you get more goats? The fairly easy answer is No, we won't.

Our lives have become infinitely more distracting, busy and we simply have too much going on to warrant or justify adding more animals. It was a great run, a lot of fun, and I'm ever so glad we did it, and became Laughing Goat Botanical Gardens. We will always be, as that is how we started. We have forged community relationships, made connections, and were a part of a world I learned so much about because of that kinship.

The Laughing Goats corral will become a Memorial Garden and picnic/dining area. We will always be Laughing Goat Botanical Gardens, just now, our Goats are laughing elsewhere.

Forever finding the coolest things in the Garden, but this one is pretty high on the list.

I was startled, while cleaning up around the Garden Shop to see what was a fairly large bird sitting on the ground, with its eyes closed. I won't lie, I thought it was injured, as it was so very still, with eyes closed. It's so peculiar to see something you've never seen before in this position, I quickly snapped a photo to send to my bird-ID'ing friend (shoutout to Kayla) and started to investigate.

I did give a gentle prod, to see if the bird would react. It slowly opened its eyes to look at me with what I can only describe as a withering look, and kind of hopped awkwardly to its right, to move away from me, where it settled into a new spot. This is unusual behavior for a healthy bird, so I started to get up to find a box to put said bird into, when all at once it took flight. It happened so quickly and gracefully, it was a bit of a shock.

Giant wings unfolded as what I now knew to be a Nighthawk set aloft, with a beautiful quiet rustle and off it went. Hopefully to find a more suitable napping spot.

Nighthawks are crepuscular members of the Nightjar family, with long wings, short legs, and very short beaks. They hunt at night, and are often seen, not heard. The Common Nighthawk is an aerial insectivore that feeds almost exclusively on flying insects caught on the wing. They forage at dawn, dusk, and nighttime—often capitalizing on insects swarms around light. Primarily, they eat moths, beetles, flies, mosquitoes, crickets, grasshoppers and termites.

Using pesticides in areas where Nighthawks are found is detrimental to the insect populations they rely on for survival, and while listed as least concern, is one of the reasons their population has dropped by 50-60%.

As Kayla said to me: "Super cool birds, don’t get to see them very often. More likely to just hear them at night"

A blank slate.

We are used to them around here, as we have started with many a blank slate, and transformed it into something greater than the sum of its parts.

Soil, Sun, Water, Plants = a blooming Garden, filled with life.

Shiplap, Cement, Paint, Goods = a Garden Shop, stacked with treasures, sourced with love.

Space, Wood, Paint, Books = a Garden Library, teeming with possibilities.

Ideas, Inspiration, Hands, Heart = a Garden that supports my Heart, Soul and Dreams.

It's not quite finished yet, but we are getting there - closer to the finish line of having a bona fide Library on site, to house my ever growing collection of Botanical, Horticultural, Flower Growing/Farming, Floral Arranging, and everything else that migrates around the axis of a Garden-centered life Books. Along with what will be a Conference table for gathering, and a Seed Library, this will be my new Garden workspace, entertaining, workshopping, workhorse of a space.

Steve and I have so many ideas about how this space will be used, and I'm ever so excited to see it all gelling together.

Does anyone have a stack of used towels to donate to our friends over at South Sound Snip & Tip? You may remember them from our recent Goats & Gatos Charity Garden Tour.

Reach out directly to them please. And Thank You.

Our very own "Flower Farm" (we don't actually consider ourselves Flower Farmers anymore) will be available - soon!

We have multiple spaces in the Gardens for varying group sizes, as well as opportunities to celebrate life's most precious moments. Whether a wedding, anniversary, shower, or just intimate gathering to make memories, we have crafted what I promise will be a spot you and your beloved will never forget.

Flower farms are emerging as sought-after wedding venues, offering both a sustainable and photogenic backdrop.

Yesterday (Saturday) was full in the best way possible.

Steve and I needed a bit of a break from the Gardens, and we played hooky for the day to head over to Poulsbo and Bainbridge Island, and visit my folks.

First stop was Valley Nursery, and let me tell you, you don't want to sleep on this one. We did a video, which will share once it's ready.

If you haven't been, it's a terrific nursery that is well-organized, chock full of great plant selections, and really kind and helpful staff. I filled up 2 carts and then some, and had to stop for room and sanity. I knew I'd have to plant them...

After the Nursery, we headed over to Bainbridge, to check out a fish and chips shop that was getting rave reviews, took the Corgis on a walk about town where they got new leashes and collars for our travel van, a cookie from a sidewalk cookie jar, and lots of pets at the Farmer's Market. Steve and I walked around and visited a few shops, including our friend Trey who owns Details, in both Poulsbo and now his new shop on BI.

It's a great area to spend the afternoon, I love all the Gardens and plantings everywhere, the beautiful containers, and the vibe check is great. It was full of people out shopping, browsing, walking, and just hanging out.

The evening was spent watering in plants, because somebody has to do it 🙋‍♀️ and then planting some of my new plant babes, including this Pop Art Rose (in photos) that is not my normal go-to plant, but I was enchanted by it, and the scent. Glorious.

Today is for watering, and planting, and more watering.
Happy Sunday to you!

Got a tiny bit distracted yesterday by our new bench arriving - all the way from Summerland, California (near Montecito) we found this stunner in the most charming shop, and made the arrangements to have it, along with an antique table from Italy, shipped up.

I had really hoped it would have been here in time for our May 30 Garden Tour for all to see, but our world doesn't often have the stars aligned in that way.

In any case, bench placed, and on to pruning roses, and wafting about while watering, cutting, and cleaning up.

Today, I'm off to some local nurseries that are new to me to scope them out, and see if I can find a few things I need. Do you want to come along on a nursery shopping trip?

We have the Gardens.

We have the Plants.

We have the Camera.

I hope this isn't a super-cringe experiment, to start doing these videos. I feel out of practice with being on camera, and feel I look a hot mess in the Garden most of the time, so be gentle and kind, please.
