Fun little project from last season. Small set of steps and walkway. Customer wanted a set of steps from the driveway using materials that were already on site. Small boulders for the edges were harvested from around the property. The steps and walkway were created by breaking and shaping 2'x3' pieces of cut flagstone that were in a pile at the back of the property. The pieces were broken and shaped by hand to give them a more natural feel.

Steam restoration and Riparian Buffer installation completed in Mechanicsburg. This was an amazing job from start to finish for some of the best clients you could ask for.

Tall, thick walls of invasive Multiflora Rose and Autumn Olive were removed along a 2 Acre section of mountain fed stream that dumps out into the Yellow Breeches Creek. 170 new trees and shrubs were installed in the areas that were once occupied by the invasives.

Riparian buffers can filter up to 90% of sediment and up to 80% of excess nutrients from runoff before it reaches waterways. This helps keep water clean and protects the quality of drinking water.

Vegetation in riparian buffers slows runoff, which helps stabilize stream banks and minimize erosion. They also reduce the frequency and intensity of flooding, which can protect cropland and downstream communities.

Riparian buffers also provide food, shelter, and shade for aquatic organisms, as well as corridors for terrestrial wildlife to move through.

The river and waterfalls at Mennonite Central Committee - MCC is finally complete. This project was a wild ride from start to finish.
11.5 tons of boulders
3 tons of river stone
Hundreds of native plants installed by Katrina Lefever with the help of Eli Lefever & Rita Tomassetti.
Countless head smacks on the bucket of the excavator while trying to strap and unstrap boulders

This area used to be an unsightly pit of stone that was supposed to be managing water runoff from the nearby paths and roofs of the guest houses. It was not functioning as designed.
Now, rainwater from the nearby roofs is piped into the basin that hold the water circulating through the river. Once the basin is topped off, excess water is piped out to a dry river bed.
The shale and clay soil that was once surrounded the river was removed. Healthy topsoil along with peat moss was installed, to help slow down and capture water coming off the metal roof of the adjacent guest house where there is no gutter.

I couldn't be happier with the way this project turned out.

I see this tree almost everyday during the drop offs and pick ups from school. I put the ivy on notice a few weeks ago, and today was finally the day. The bark was in really rough shape, so I don’t remove the larger, thicker vines that really had ahold of it. They were cut and treated as close to the ground as possible. Hopefully it helps and the redbud will be a little happier in the coming seasons.
The ivy still growing on the ground will be addressed in the coming weeks!!

Appreciation post for the unofficial sponsor of my stick tools and wheelbarrows and equipment. Foxduck in Lancaster has the best designs, stickers, prints, clothing and accessories. They love central Pennsylvania and the river that runs through it. Everything they make is of the highest quality and if you haven’t stopped in or checked them out online, it’s time you did. I’m in love with all of their stuff, especially the eastern hemlock with keystones design. I am super hard on all of my tools and these stickers continue to take a beating and look great!

Before and afters from the last week of '23.
Clearing out Multiflora Rose and Honeysuckle with the help of Tyler Snelbaker and Eli Lefever.
Making serious progress against these two terrible plants. Everything was dug out by hand and stacked neatly onto habit creating brush piles, with the exception of the larger Honeysuckle that were growing on or close the the streams bank. The few that could not be dug out were cut at the base and chemically treated, to ensure that the banks of the stream were not disturbed.

Slowly clearing out invasives in the woods. Shrub Honeysuckle and Multiflora Rose have plagued these woods, completely taking over and preventing anything else to fill in and flourish here. This is a great time of year to do this type of work!

There were tons of Spicebush that were rescued in the process, that were being chocked out and would have eventually been killed from the Multiflora Rose dominating them. Great day in the woods!

Informal flagstone garden path installed this fall. Red sandstone was used to create small terraces to help break up the grade at the top of the path. A thick layer of wood chips were installed to smother the turf grass that once occupied this space.

Super fun water feature installed at MCC in Akron.
This area was originally going to be planted like the rest of the bed space created when the retaining walls were installed. Staff on site asked if it could instead be a pondless water feature and I happily said of course!!
There is a 100 gallon basin hidden underneath the stones, that houses a pump circulating the water. Birds, bees, yellow jackets and butterflies all love playing in and drinking from the fountain. The staff at MCC loves playing with it as well!

Wall project from a few months ago at MCC in Akron.
I dont usually work with engineered stone, but I made an exception for the great folks at MCC. The wall wraps around the newly constructed veranda, and provides a nice sized planting bed to help soften the area. Over 100 linear feet of wall.

I have been really slacking lately on posting stuff. Here are some hilarious birds splashing around on the bubbling stone in the front yard.
Even tiny water features like this one can make a huge impact on the visitors to your property
