🚧Friday feels like a good time to look back at one of our recent project completions. 👀

Our PennDOT King Hill Road Culvert project has been wrapped up for a few weeks now, but this transformation is worth another look. 🔍

In under one month, our crew closed the road, removed the existing culvert, installed the new box culvert, profiled over 650 feet of roadway, completed full pavement and drainage restoration, and had King Hill Road reopened to traffic. 😤

A fast-paced project with a lot packed into a short schedule — and a finished product our crew can be proud of. 👌🏼

From road closed to job complete in under 30 days. That’s a solid way to head into the weekend. 🔥

✂️ Another 3.5 miles of trail officially open!

Rutledge Excavating was proud to join the Rail Trail Council for the ribbon cutting celebrating the completion of this 3.5-mile trail project.

There’s something special about building trails along retired railroad corridors. These routes helped shape and connect our communities for generations, and today they’re being rebuilt to serve them in an entirely new way.

As we shared at yesterday’s ceremony:

“We’re not creating a new path—we’re giving an old one a new purpose.”

Thank you to Lynn Conrad and the Rail Trail Council for their dedication to expanding the trail system, PennDOT for managing and funding the project, and Tim Wilson for the design. Most importantly, thank you to our crews in the field who turned those plans into 3.5 miles of finished trail.

Trail construction has become a niche we’re proud to have developed throughout Northeast Pennsylvania and into New York State. This year alone, Rutledge Excavating is on track to construct more than 11 miles of trail within an hour and a half of our office.

A railroad corridor built generations ago to connect communities is doing it once again—just in a new way.

We’re proud to have helped carry that history forward.

Where Iron Meets Earth. Where History Meets Progress.

Today, two legends shared the rails beside our work. As Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 thundered through the D&L Trail project alongside Reading Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad No. 2102, Rutledge Excavating was hard at work building the next chapter of this historic corridor.

The ground shook. The whistles echoed through the mountains. Steam and diesel met fresh stone and new trail.

Moments like this remind us that we’re not just moving earth—we’re working alongside history. The same railroad that once fueled America’s growth now runs beside a trail being built for future generations to explore.

Another 3.5 miles of trail completed in Susquehanna County for our great friends at Rail-Trail Council! 🚴‍♀️🏃‍♂️🚶

The TSA installed on this project was manufactured at Jen Rutledge Materials and tested/approved by PennDot… We are very proud to be able to source specialized aggregates for projects like these! 🪨

🚧 Fun Fact: TSA (Trail Surface Aggregate) creates a firm, stable, and well-drained surface that’s comfortable for walking, running, and biking while helping reduce erosion. 🚧

Keep an eye out for the next trail enhancement project starting in the very near future…. 👀

Rutledge Excavating is making great strides on the D&L Trail in Mountain Top, PA, with the infiltration trench, subbase, and trail surface aggregate now being installed along this scenic section of the 4.5-mile project.

We’re proud to be part of another exciting milestone for our region!

This past week marked the groundbreaking of the Oliver Mills to Mountain Top section of the D&L Trail, a project that will help connect communities, preserve local history, and create new opportunities for outdoor recreation throughout Luzerne County. This new section of trail will transform a former railroad corridor into a multi-use trail for residents and visitors to enjoy for generations to come.

Rutledge Excavating is honored to play a role in bringing this vision to life. Projects like this are about more than moving dirt—they’re about building lasting infrastructure that strengthens our communities and enhances the quality of life across Northeastern Pennsylvania.
