Johnson County commissioners approved a combined $48.9 million for 2027 road and stormwater projects at their Thursday, October 22 meeting.
The money runs through two long-running county programs. The County Assistance Road System, known as CARS, will fund 15 projects in 13 cities. The Stormwater Management Program covers 22 inspection and replacement projects and five watershed improvements aimed at flood risk and water quality. The county says nearly $830 million has gone through the two programs since they started.
The breakdown:

🏗️ Switzer Road, 167th to 179th, Overland Park, about $4.8 million
🔄 Lone Elm, 119th to Harold, Olathe, $3.3 million
🛤️ 83rd Street, Gleason to Clare, Lenexa, $2 million
🚧 Shawnee Mission Parkway Phase 3, Quivira to the east city limits, Shawnee, $2 million
CARS pays up to half of a project's eligible construction and inspection costs, and cities cover design, right of way and utility work. The county says every first priority project cities submitted got funded this round. CARS money comes from the county's share of fuel tax revenue and property tax support. Stormwater is paid for by a dedicated one tenth of one percent sales tax.
In the county's release, Board Chairman Mike Kelly said shared investment in basic infrastructure is how the county delivers services and keeps growing.
