A building can look simple while being anything but simple to build.

Dan Hill, Senior Principal Architect, reflects on how good architecture requires balancing the design idea with detailing, cost, and the realities of construction.

The goal isn’t simplicity for simplicity’s sake. It’s finding a clear solution that works for the building, the budget, and the people it serves.

Experience matters when a project gets complex.

As the owner’s representative for Treetops, Charlie Patterson has seen firsthand how much the right local relationships can affect a project. From city staff and inspectors to subcontractors and consultants, established connections can help keep the process moving with more clarity and efficiency.

That kind of trust is built over time.

We’re grateful to Charlie for recognizing the value of Arbor South’s long-standing presence in Eugene and the network our team brings to each project.

Designed around the landscape, light, and some pretty incredible Cascade views.

Set on an elevated northwest-sloping site, the Ironstone Residence was carefully oriented to capture both Mount Hood and Mount Jefferson from nearly every room. The long, linear footprint follows the natural contours of the site, bringing in morning light at the rear patio and framing golden-hour mountain views from the front veranda.

Inside, the home was designed to live larger than its footprint. The light-filled great room can comfortably host a crowd while still feeling intimate day to day, and flexible spaces throughout the home make every square foot work harder - including a craft room that doubles as a bunk room, a compact home office, and a garage space that opens into a covered outdoor gym.

Outdoor spaces were given just as much thought, from the sheltered dining alcove and private patio to the hot tub, putting green, board-formed concrete walls, drought-tolerant landscaping, and a front porch fire pit made for watching the sun set over the mountains.

We loved collaborating with Wittmer Construction to bring this home to life, with our own Dan Hill leading the design and contributing his construction expertise through Arbor South.

And a big thank you to Derrek Miyahara for beautifully capturing the finished home.

One of Tyler Stone’s favorite parts of the job is seeing something move from an idea on a screen to an actual building.

As the Lead Draftsman at Arbor South Architecture, Tyler works across different parts of the design process, helping translate what a client is describing into drawings and 3D models they can see, respond to, and refine.

Then eventually, that model becomes something you can walk into.

That part never really gets old.

One of our upcoming affordable housing projects is making news in Springfield.

Arbor South is proud to be designing SquareOne Villages’ newest cooperative housing community near Main Street and 33rd Street in Springfield.

The 50-home development is currently in the planning stages and is expected to include a mix of studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom and four-bedroom homes, along with shared indoor and outdoor community spaces.

SquareOne Villages continues to expand its cooperative housing model throughout Lane County, creating opportunities for permanently affordable housing.

We’re excited to be part of a project focused on strengthening the Springfield community through thoughtful, attainable housing.

A little site visit fun on the Oregon Coast with our Senior Principal Architect, Dan Hill, and his newest sidekick, Ivy Blu.

Coastal projects come with their own unique challenges, especially when it comes to detailing and designing for the climate. We’re excited to be working with Cunningham Built Custom Homes and bringing their experience into the process as the project moves forward.

Great projects really do come down to great collaboration - between the client, architect, and contractor - and we’re looking forward to seeing this one come together.

Committing to the craft of construction means intentional learning at both ends: diving deep into the drawings at your desk and stepping onto the field to see how it all physically connects. You can’t fully master one without the other.

For Dan Hill, a certified Master Builder & Senior Principal Architect, Francis D.K. Ching’s books became foundational resources - influencing how he understood architectural organization, construction details, and even the drawings he later created for Fine Homebuilding Magazine.

Ryan Rojas, Principal at Arbor South Architecture, puts it simply: architecture is about people.

A building project comes with a lot of decisions, and for many clients, it may be the first time they’ve ever gone through the process. Our job is to listen, communicate clearly, work closely with the contractor, and help make those decisions feel manageable.

At the end of the day the building does matter, but so does the journey our clients & consultants take getting there.

A look back at this modern Pacific Northwest home on Gillespie Butte, designed in partnership with Butler Homes, Inc. and Arbor South Architecture.

Thoughtful details, clean lines, and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape come together in a home that feels distinctly rooted in the Pacific Northwest.

Historic restoration has a messy middle - and it is one of the most important parts of the process.

Interior spaces are opened up, original framing is exposed, floors and finishes are being protected, and exterior work continues around the home. This is the stage where coordination matters most. Every opening, removal, repair, and field condition has to be understood before the next piece can be rebuilt or restored.

Restoration is not a straight line and is a careful process of uncovering, protecting, and rebuilding with respect for what came before.
