Rodents in Oregon: Why Winter Brings Unwanted Guests Indoors
When the weather turns cold and wet here in Oregon, most of us want to stay cozy inside. Unfortunately, so do rodents! Mice and rats don’t enjoy the chilly rain any more than we do — and when temperatures drop, they start looking for warmth, food, and shelter… often right inside our homes.
Why Rodents Move In During Winter
As winter settles in, outdoor food sources disappear, and rodents start searching for a comfortable place to ride out the season. Your home offers everything they need:
Warmth from heaters and insulation
Food from pantries, pet dishes, and even crumbs
Water from leaky pipes or pet bowls
It doesn’t take much for a mouse or rat to get inside — they can squeeze through gaps as small as a dime!
How to Tell If You Have Unwanted Guests
Rodents are sneaky, but they leave behind some telltale clues. Keep an eye (and ear) out for:
Tiny droppings in cupboards, under sinks, or along walls
Scratching or scurrying noises, especially at night
Chewed food bags or gnaw marks on wires or furniture
Shredded paper or insulation used for nesting
A musty or ammonia-like smell in certain areas
If you notice even one of these signs, it’s a good idea to act quickly before the problem grows.
Why You Don’t Want to Ignore Rodents
Aside from being a nuisance, rodents can cause real problems. They can carry bacteria and diseases, chew through wires (creating fire risks), and contaminate food. Plus, they reproduce quickly — a couple of mice can turn into dozens before you know it!
Simple Ways to Keep Rodents Out
Here are a few steps you can take to help prevent rodents from moving in:
Seal up small openings around doors, vents, and pipes.
Store food securely — even pet food — in airtight containers.
Clean regularly to remove crumbs and clutter.
Fix leaky pipes or standing water issues.
Trim back trees and bushes that touch your house — they act like bridges for rodents!
