E&M PLUMBING COMPANY·

The colorful and savvy Eugene Downes began E&M Plumbing Company with his wife Marie in 1947. Gene never completed high school and came to St. Louis via the way of Chicago. While in Chicago he worked in a hardware store. Louis to be

with his Aunt Emmie. Some of Gene’s first jobs in St. Louis were to haul ice & coal. He also worked in the quarries for N.O. Sled also owned a plumbing company of which Gene went to work for and learned the trade. Since he knew plumbing, one of Gene’s illustrious jobs was to work on the Alaskan Highway. He was a boss for the plumbers and the fitters while in Alaska. The money was good but the social life was lacking. It’s hard to imagine what life must have been like up there during this period, but Gene lived it! When he came home, Gene decided to start his own company and thus, E&M Plumbing Company came to be! [If you haven’t guessed it yet, the ‘E’ is for Eugene and the ‘M’ is for Marie – Our Founders!]

FROM OUR FRIENDS AT MISSOURI AMERICAN WATER!

It's time to be wise and winterize! As cold weather and winter approach, it's important to protect your pipes from freezing during low temperatures. Frozen pipes can leave you without water in the worst of weather and cost a lot to repair. With a few simple steps, you can easily preserve both your budget and your peace of mind.
LOCATE & TEST YOUR MAIN WATER SHUT-OFF VALVE
Before the cold sets in, locate your main water shut-off valve and hang an I.D. tag on it so you can find it quickly in an emergency. In many homes, it is located near the water meter or close to where the water pipe enters the home.

To test your main water shut-off valve, slowly close it. If you have a ball valve, it generally only requires a quarter turn to close. Gate valves are generally closed by turning the handle clockwise and should turn easily. You may need to have it serviced if it does not close easily.

Once the shut-off valve is completely closed, check sinks and other water fixtures to make sure you found the main water valve and that it is working properly. If no water comes out of any faucets, CONGRATULATIONS, you found your shut-off valve! See below for more tips to help keep life flowing this winter.
WINTER TIPS

OPEN CABINET DOORS
If pipes run through cabinets or vanities, open the doors to let warmer room temperatures flow in.

PROTECT YOUR PIPES
Wrap pipes with insulation or heat tape before cold weather sets in.

CHECK IRRIGATION SYSTEMS
Make sure everything is turned off and drained.

ELIMINATE COLD DRAFTS
Eliminate sources of cold air near water lines and fix drafts around windows and doors.

ALLOW WATER TO FLOW
When temperatures stay below freezing, keep water moving through the pipes by allowing a small trickle of water to run.

Here are some tips from our friends at Missouri American Water Company just in time for colder weather!

Frozen pipes can leave you without water in the worst of weather and cost a lot to repair. But with a few simple steps, you can easily preserve both your budget and your peace of mind.

BEFORE THE COLD SETS IN
#1 - Know how to shut off your water: Locate your main water shut-off valve. In many homes, it is located near the water meter or close to where the water pipe enters the home.

#2 - Check sprinkler or irrigation systems: Make sure everything is turned off and fully drained.

#3 (VERY IMPORTANT!) Eliminate sources of cold air near water lines: Check for pipes in areas that might be prone to freezing, such as crawl spaces, unheated rooms, basements, garages, and exterior walls. Fix drafty windows, insulate walls around pipes and plug drafts around doors.

#4 - Protect your pipes: Where pipes are exposed to cold, wrap them with insulation or heat tape (even fabric or newspaper can help).

WHEN TEMPERATURES STAY BELOW FREEZING

Give pipes a helping hand: If pipes run through cabinets or vanities, open the doors to let warmer room temperatures flow in.

Keep water moving through the pipes: Allow a small trickle of water to run. The cost of the extra water is typically lower than the cost to repair a broken pipe.

IF YOUR PIPES FREEZE

Shut off the water immediately: Don’t attempt to thaw pipes without turning off the main shut-off valve.

Thaw a frozen pipe by warming the air around it: Do not leave space heaters unattended and avoid using kerosene heaters or open flames.

Carefully turn the water back on: Once pipes are thawed, slowly turn the water back on and check pipes and joints for any cracks or leaks.

Time to ditch the plastic!

Many homeowners turn to bottled water as an alternative to their local tap water, which significantly contributes to a huge environmental issue: plastic pollution.

Be part of the pollution solution: use an in-home EcoWater water filtration system. 💡

Always fun to share these old photos on Throwback Thursday. This one dates back to June 1983 when St. Louis County Executive Gene McNary proclaims June 1984 plumbing month in St. Louis County, MO. Black History Month gives us an opportunity to celebrate the stories and history of black Americans. Lewis Latimer received a patent in 1881 for the "electric lamp" an improved design to create light from electricity and another in 1882 for "Process of Manufacturing Carbons". These are only 2 of the 7 patents Latimer received. He worked with both Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison.
