We started by removing and cleaning up an old, unused alarm system and unnecessary wiring. From there:

🖥️ Installed a dedicated data rack to properly house the camera system, router & mesh access points
📹 Rebuilt the Axis Companion camera system after the customer no longer had the original credentials
📡 Cleaned up and organized the networking equipment
🔧 Troubleshot an outlet issue and added the required GFCI protection to bring it up to current code requirements
💡 Installed landscape uplighting to completely change the look of the property after dark

5 THINGS I WOULD NEVER DO IN MY OWN HOME AS AN ELECTRICIAN

After seeing what we see every week… there are a few things we're just not doing.

❌ Use extension cords as permanent wiring
❌ Ignore an outlet that's warm, buzzing, or discolored
❌ Keep resetting a breaker that repeatedly trips
❌ Add major electrical loads without checking what the existing system can handle
❌ Assume electrical work is safe just because “it's been like that for years”

Electrical problems don't always fail immediately.

Sometimes questionable work operates for YEARS before the right combination of conditions exposes the problem.

That's why our favorite sentence probably isn't:

This spot brings back a lot of memories.

Countless nights were spent right here at this very desk watching Tristan’s baseball practice studying the NEC and preparing for my Master Electrician exam.

After years in the field, I had been led to believe starting my own electrical contracting company was nearly impossible. The truth was, I already had the hours and experience; I just needed to figure out the path. COVID and testing roadblocks in St. Louis County didn't make it any easier.

But quitting has never been an option for me. If you know me, you know I've always been a go-getter. When I set a goal, I find a way.

Those nights studying while watching Tristan man practice eventually became part of the foundation for Atoms Electrical Co.

Today, I look at this spot and remember exactly why you should never let someone else convince you that your dream isn't possible.

Wonky solar numbers? Who you gonna call? ATOMS!

This Enphase system had inaccurate production and consumption readings—and the problem went deeper than expected.

After testing loads, isolating solar arrays, verifying phasing, and tracing the CT monitoring, we found manufacturer-installed CT pairs were reversed.

Corrected. Tested. Verified.

Think Your Solar System Isn't Working Like It Should?

This project is a great example of what we find when we dig deeper.

During removal and troubleshooting, we discovered:

🐿️ Critter-damaged wiring; rodents love chewing on today's wire insulation and plastics, some of which use plant-based materials such as soy.

⚡ Incorrect polarity on PV Links that prevented proper operation.

⚠️ Mismatched SnapRS 801 & 802 devices throughout the system, contributing to PVRSS lockout issues after firmware updates.

These aren't problems you fix by simply resetting an error code or replacing one part.

HAPPY FRIDAY FROM ATOMS ELECTRICAL CO.!

Another troubleshoot in the books; and this one got interesting!

We received an emergency call for outlets not working in the living room. What sounded like a simple service call turned into several electrical corrections and ultimately an intermittent failure at the home's main disconnect.

We started by evaluating the panel, breakers, neutrals, connections, and voltage. During our investigation, we found:

⚡ Grounds and neutrals improperly bonded together in a subpanel with no proper equipment grounding conductor back to the main point of disconnect.

⚡ A whole-home surge protector sharing the EV charger's 40-amp GFCI breaker.

⚡ The EV charger's neutral improperly terminated, preventing the GFCI breaker from operating as intended.

After correcting those issues, we returned to the original living-room problem.

We discovered a switch loop controlling the receptacles and improperly wired 3-way switches, with the common and travelers incorrectly configured.

Corrected. Tested. Everything was working.

Then...

BAM; the house had an exorcist moment.

Power started acting strange again.

But now the symptoms told us exactly where to look.

By asking which rooms had power and which didn't, we quickly recognized a pattern: every other breaker was being affected. That pointed us toward one leg of the electrical service.

The culprit?

A failing main disconnect breaker was intermittently not allowing 120V through L2.

This is why troubleshooting isn't just about opening outlets and replacing parts. It's about asking the right questions, understanding how the entire electrical system works together, recognizing patterns, and following the evidence.

We may ask:

-What electrical projects were completed recently?
-Have pictures, TVs, shelves, or nails recently been installed?
-Has the power company worked on the service?
Which rooms have power and which don't?

Sometimes just a couple of answers can shine a light on what's happening before we ever open another box.

We don't just find a problem; we find the root cause.
