🌲 Back to Our Roots: Defensible Space
While large-scale fuels reduction and forest health projects take up much of our schedule, we still love getting back to our roots and completing a great defensible space project when we can!

This particular property had the benefit of being evaluated and marked by three different parties:
🔥 First, by our friends at Evergreen Fire/Rescue for defensible space recommendations.
🏡 Second, by Jefferson County Colorado Government for requirements associated with a building permit.
🌲 And finally, by Forestwerx's own forestry and defensible space specialist, who expanded the plan to take a comprehensive look at wildfire risk and forest health across the entire property.

The final project included the removal of more than 50 trees, along with strategic fuels reduction and spacing improvements throughout the property.

The result? A beautiful finished product that maintains the character of the property while significantly improving the home’s wildfire safety profile.

Good defensible space doesn’t mean clearing everything around your home. It means making thoughtful, strategic decisions about vegetation, fuels, forest health, and how wildfire may interact with your property.

🎨 Painting Done.

Many of our clients ask us the same questions before a project begins:

What will my property look like when you’re done? What should I expect? Will I still love my land?

In Dare to Lead, Brené Brown talks about the concept of “painting done”—clearly communicating what a successful final product looks like so everyone, from the client to the team doing the work, shares the same vision.

At Forestwerx, we take that idea seriously.

We paint “done” with specialized expertise, purpose-built machinery, relentless dedication, and an eye for the landscape honed through more than 100 years of combined professional wildland firefighting and forestry experience.

For us, “done” isn’t simply acres treated or trees removed. It means leaving behind a landscape that is more resilient to wildfire, healthier as a forest, and still a place the landowner is proud to call their own.

Excellence is how we define done at FWX.

🌲 These photos show the finished product of an 18.1-acre fuels reduction project for Elk Creek Fire, funded by the Colorado State Forest Service and U.S. Forest Service.

This project builds upon a 17-acre project our team completed in early 2026 and creates an important link between that treatment and the 2025 helicopter logging project in Staunton State Park—helping connect individual treatments into a larger, more meaningful landscape-scale fuels reduction effort.

Our team completed all 18.1 acres in just under four weeks, earning high praise from the landowner and the agencies responsible for inspecting and certifying the work.

We think the finished landscape speaks for itself.

Wildfire doesn’t just live in the woods—and good forestry extends far beyond the mountains.

Forestwerx was honored to be selected by the Willow Springs community in Morrison, Colorado, to complete a first-of-its-kind, landscape-scale fuels reduction project that was 100% community-driven and funded.

This project treated 12 strategic acres of collectively owned open space, focusing on:
🔥 Local wildfire ignition points
🚒 Evacuation and emergency egress protection
🌲 Areas identified through fire-behavior modeling as having the potential to produce extreme fire conditions threatening nearby homes

The work required operating in sensitive red rock areas, near homes, and alongside heavily used community trail systems—all while balancing wildfire mitigation with the character and use of the open space.

Projects like this don't happen without strong partnerships. We’d like to thank West Metro Fire Rescue and Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Wildland Fire Management team for their support and input on this project.

And an especially big thank you goes to the residents of the Willow Springs neighborhoods for their patience with trail closures, equipment, noise, and crews working in their community.

We hope this project can serve as a model and inspiration for other wildland-urban interface communities looking to better understand how wildfire may interact with their neighborhoods—and what can be done about it before a fire occurs.

“Daddy… if we love the trees, why are you cutting them down?”

That’s the question my boys ask me that stops everything—and it perfectly captures why we do what we do.

My answer is always another question.

“Boys, do you love the trees, or do you love the forest—with everything in it?”

Without hesitation, they answer:

“We love the FOREST, Daddy!”

That simple conversation says everything.

As kids, many of us grew up reading The Lorax. It’s still one of the greatest introductions to caring about nature, and I hope every child reads it. But over the years, I think many of us unintentionally learned to focus on the trees instead of the forest.

Around Forestwerx, we jokingly call this the “Lorax Effect.”

Loving the forest means understanding that it’s much more than trees. It’s wildlife, native plants, insects, healthy soils, clean water, mountain communities… and yes, even fire. Every piece has a purpose.

Just like our bodies or our homes, forests need care and maintenance. Sometimes that means removing unhealthy, overcrowded, or hazardous trees so the entire ecosystem has the chance to thrive.

Our mission isn’t simply to cut trees.

It’s to protect forests.

And that mission begins by teaching our children—and reminding ourselves—to see the whole ecosystem, not just one part of it.

Because if we only protect individual trees, we may lose the very forest we love.

We are super proud and honored to share that Forestwerx has been voted as the best of the best and service in for 2026! We owe a huge thank you to our home community who has supported us for the last 6 years and allowed us to get to where we are today.
