Wild Turkeys spend their days walking and scratching on the ground for acorns, seeds, and insects. But at dusk they do something many people never see: they fly up into the trees and roost together for the night, well out of reach of predators on the ground. In the morning they glide back down and start foraging again.

If you have ever spotted a male House Finch that looks more tangerine or yellow than red, you are seeing what he ate during his last molt. Male House Finches cannot make red pigment on their own. Their color comes from carotenoid pigments in the berries and seeds they find while growing new feathers, so birds at the same feeder can range from pale yellow-orange to deep crimson.
