The seat wall is one of the hardest-working elements in a terraced landscape design, and this project is a good example of why.

Built from fieldstone and capped with honed bluestone, the curved wall holds back the grade on one side, marks a safe boundary at the slope's edge on the other side, and provides bonus permanent weather-ready seating right where you want it — around the fire. It earns its place many times over before a single guest sits down.

The flagstone patio is laid in complementary bluestone, tying the materials together so the hardscape reads as one cohesive system rather than a collection of parts.

"𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦." Those words came from the Lynchburg Garden Club following our landscape renovation at the Historic Miller-Claytor House — a historic 1791 town house tucked at the entrance to Riverside Park and one of Lynchburg's most cherished community spaces.

Caring for a place with that kind of history isn't something we take lightly, and knowing the team showed up every day with that same attention means everything. We're grateful for the partnership and grateful to play a small part in preserving something that belongs to all of us.

𝑇𝑤𝑜 𝑤𝑒𝑒𝑘𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠, 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑏𝑙𝑒 𝑏𝑎𝑐𝑘𝑑𝑟𝑜𝑝. What started as a graded base and a careful boulder layout has become a hand-laid flagstone patio built to host morning coffee, evening fires, and everything in between.

Our team set each boulder for the fire feature with intention, then fit the flagstone tight and true across a compacted base engineered to last through Central Virginia's freeze and thaw seasons.

And that Blue Ridge skyline? That part was already perfect. We're just building a reason to sit and take it in. 😍🌅

This morning we gathered for our monthly all-team meeting, a chance to pause, celebrate, and keep the momentum going as we move into the heart of summer.
