This project started with a question: hybrid or all-electric?
The answer wasn’t sitting in an equipment catalog.
We looked at the home’s heating load, historical energy use, duct system, electrical capacity, planned insulation improvements, cold-weather heat-pump performance, utility incentives, and long-term operating costs before deciding what this house actually needed.
The homeowner had a legitimate hybrid option on the table too — a two-stage 97% furnace paired with a cold-climate heat pump. It wasn’t dismissed just because we wanted an all-electric project. It was compared on the merits.
In the end, the all-electric approach made the most sense for this home and this homeowner’s long-term goals: a Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat cold-climate heat pump, electric supplemental heat, a heat-pump water heater, and the electrical service upgrade to support it.
That’s what Green Spirit is built around. Not starting with a box we want to sell. Starting with the house, understanding the options, and building the right plan from there.

🏡 The best upgrade isn't always the first upgrade. The sequence matters.

One of the biggest lessons I've learned after 25+ years in the industry is that homes should be planned as systems, not as individual projects.

Too often, insulation, HVAC, electrical, solar, ventilation, and remodeling are designed independently. The result? Missed opportunities, unnecessary compromises, and sometimes expensive rework.

The photos below are real examples:
1) A conditioned attic made it possible to install a heat pump air handler and ductwork inside the home's thermal envelope instead of a hot attic. If they had already added blown in insulation before I met with them, they would have had to redo the insulation or end up with a lessor outcome.

2) Boiler piping was rerouted through the floor joists before a basement was finished, creating a cleaner ceiling and avoiding future demolition.

3) Solar electrical equipment requires code clearances that can limit where a future heat pump can be installed. A simple conversation between the solar and HVAC designers could have preserved better options years later.

None of these projects were "wrong." They simply demonstrate how today's decisions shape tomorrow's possibilities.

Before investing in major home improvements, it's worth asking:
"How will this decision affect the next project?"

That's the role I want Green Spirit to play—not simply recommending equipment, but helping homeowners see the bigger picture so each investment supports the next.

Replacing your AC with a heat pump? Make sure the quote includes compatible heat pump, refrigerant piping, and make sure it’s protected from the sun/UV rays so the insulation holds up long-term. Also, it’s a good opportunity to rethink where the placement of the AC/heat pump will be for the next 20+ years.

Summit Ave Eco fair

Was fun to run in many previous customers and to hear how well their heat pumps have performed.

Also had some good conversations with people about opportunities in their own home. People were surprised to hear that even if they live in a condo, there are a few interesting projects that can improve the building itself and their individual condo.

Recently completed heat pump system installation in Saint Paul.

With these mini split/ductless system installations the less you see outside the better.

Too often HVAC installers leave the house with tubing all over the place because “it’s easier”.

Better planning can minimize or eliminate the need for external piping.
